A friend of mine already attended this University and spoke highly of it. Mum wanted to move away from our home town, and the University had a campus in an area we liked. Out of 4-5 Universities, I applied to, this one was my first preference based on the above information, and they accepted me. As it was my first preference, the way the QTAC application system worked meant I only received their offer.
Exams
I had a pre-existing interest in creating content (film/music/etc) and I skimmed through a book that listed a plethora of courses that could lead to a career in film and media, and this course had a list of potential career options that interested me. Along with recognizing the University name, my projected OP results put me well above the entry requirements to get into the course.
Fees
The Australian government provides a HECS-HELP system which allows students to attend University and get their degree before having to pay back anything until they reach a specific annual income threshold. Also, last year, because I received above-average grades whilst living in an area that is "underrepresented in higher education participation" I received a one-off support payment to assist with study and living costs.
Faculty
All faculty members I've had the pleasure of exchanging pleasantries with have been delightful. From the librarians to lecturers and tutors, and even the cleaners, all staff has treated me with dignity and respect, regardless of the difference in age and life experience. All of my classes are quite small, averaging around 10 students to one teacher, meaning it's easy to forge a working relationship with the teacher as opposed to only having them there to spout information.
Hostel
Due to costs and my mother's wishes, I still live with family. We rent a house approximately an hour away from the university campus by train. We chose to live in this area based on my ability to easily get to University, and the affordable housing market. To my knowledge, my University does not provide student accommodation at the campus I attend, but I know other campuses do.
