- Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology - Advanced at Durham College is offered as a full-time basis for a duration of 3-year.
- Working in state-of-the-art labs using industry-grade equipment, students learn how living organisms and parts of living organisms can provide new methods of production and facilitate the development of new products, as well as learn the regulations which govern the use of these techniques.
- Our courses are rooted in real-world applications and our extensive analytical instrumentation lab provides practical, hands-on training.
- Students graduate with a strong base of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to draw from in their future careers.
- Additionally, students gain experience and knowledge in key chemistry techniques including extensive analytical instrumentation experience. In the final semester students combine their knowledge to use biological organisms to manufacture a chemical product used in an industrial process.
- Our graduates leave with the scientific theory and skills combined with a clear understanding of regulatory affairs and the ethical implications of the biotechnology industry and its influence on society.
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Perform laboratory duties independently and in compliance with pertinent legislation and regulations, as well as biotechnology standards and guidelines.
- Collaborate in implementing and evaluating quality control and quality assurance procedures to meet organizational standards and requirements.
- Select and implement best practices for sustainability.
- Complete complex biotechnological applications using advanced principles of chemistry, biology and biostatistics as well as basic principles of physics.
- Co-ordinate, implement and validate laboratory procedures to carry out quantitative and qualitative tests and analyses.
- Co-ordinate, implement and validate standard cell culture procedures under aseptic conditions.
- Co-ordinate, implement and validate molecular biology procedures.
- Manage biological data to support biological scientists and researchers in capturing, organizing/summarizing and storing their data.
- Prepare, analyze, interpret, maintain and communicate scientific data effectively.
- Develop and present a strategic plan for ongoing personal and professional development to enhance work performance.
- Apply basic business principles to biotechnology practices.
Your learning experience will be complemented by a field placement in your third year, which will enable you to utilize your newly acquired skills and gain valuable industry-related experience.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students required an Ontario Secondary Diploma (OSSD) or an OSSD Equivalency.
- If students do not have an OSSD but are 19 years of age or older, they may be eligible to apply as a mature applicant.
- English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent.
- Mathematics Grade 11 M or U or 12 C, or U, or equivalent.
- Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL and PTE to get admission in this program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Secured a minimum of 70% marks in one of these certificates: All India Senior School Certificate, Higher Secondary School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Indian School Certificate.
- Completed grade 11 and grade 12 with 70% marks.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
