I really wanted to go into the pre-vet program because I have wanted to be a vet ever since I was three years old. Around where I live there are only two universities that offer this program and the University of Prince Edward Island was my dream university. I put all of my faith into this one school and during my grade 12 year when it was time to start applying to different schools I only applied to one.
Course Curriculum
I love everything we have learned in this program so far. It is challenging but rewarding.
Exams
I have always wanted to be a veterinarian my whole life. So when I was 15 I came to this campus and attended a week-long camp with the veterinarian students learning about what it is like to be in the program. During this time I found about the pre-vet program. For me, it was the perfect program. Vet school is very competitive and by being in the pre-vet program my classes are specific to helping me get into the vet school when I am finished with my undergraduate.
Internship
Our university offers lots of different jobs around campus. Including jobs as lab assistants were you can work in labs in the subject as your current major. To get one of these jobs you will go through the lab coordinator for the subject you are interested in working in. They also offer other jobs such as working in the bookstore or at the campus pub. To get jobs like this you need to apply through the student union.
Fees
Tuition for the pre-vet program is 6,270 a year. For myself, I applied for student loans and was granted one through the Nova Scotia government. This helps me to pay for my schooling for the year and my rent where I have decided to live off of campus this year. There are also lots of different scholarships available through the university to apply for each year.
Scholarship
To apply for student loans you have to go through your home province and just provide them with some information such as tuition cost, proof of enrolment, and any other funding that you may have been rewarded.
Examination Structure
We have a good exam structure. The schedule includes three different exams a day. All of our exams are writing in the gymnasium so all sections of the same class can be together.
Faculty
The professors here are amazing. They are very personable and always willing to help. Our professors here really want to see us do well. Class sizes are a bit smaller than another university so classes feel more personal and more comfortable which makes it easier to connect with your professor.
Hostel
In the first year, I lived on campus in the residence which was a great experience. I made lots of great friends through living in residence. To live in residence you need to have a meal plan. Our meal hall is pretty good. Our campus has lots of events that happen throughout the year and more for people who are in residence. For me personally, I found I was too distracted by these events so for my second year I am living off-campus.
