Keara Review at Loyalist College, Belleville | Collegedunia

Loyalist college - accounting

K
8.7 /10

The reason why I chose to go to loyalist college was because the area made me feel at home. I came to visit one time and I just knew I wanted to stay here; not forever, but for the time being. I applied to both ottawa and Belleville in accounting and child studies. In the end I just drew a card from the hat and next thing I knew I was attending loyalist. Best decision.

Course Curriculum :

The course curriculum is definitely a handful but the people there really do want you to succeed. Just be mindful that from first year to second year is a big jump. It gets hard fast.

Exams :

During high school I always aimed for the highest. Anything below a 70 was not sufficient for me. I pushed myself so I could have doors open for me. But, a lot of the programs I wanted to attend required some courses I never completed. This limited my options. I took accounting in high school and it wasn't my best mark, but I knew I liked it, and I was thankfully able to pursue it.

Placement :

The school is always having a job fair. People are always looking to hire, but nursing and policing fields are more wanted in this area compared to any other. On the other hand most programs do offer a hands on learning environment (job placement). For accounting we do 7 weeks of a tax clinic and if you do 3rd year which is an option, you get a couple weeks of placement

Internship :

I'm not aware of any internship opportunities but we do have on campus jobs. The process is lengthy in order to be reviewed for a job. There is an application process to go through and then on top of that you have to apply directly to the job. But they do make it possible to have a job and study.

Fees :

At the beginning of the year all students are encouraged to apply for the scholarships announced by the school. There is a website posted, they send out emails, they make sure people know. There are awards to be won by every type of student attending the college. Most awards range from 300-1000 Canadian dollars.

Examination Structure :

The exam structure in most classes is fairly easy. Midterms range from 1 hour to 2 hours worth 15-25% of your final grade, and the finals are about the same. Majority of class in year one have a midterm on chapters 1-4 and then the final is on 5-8. It's night to cut back on stress

Faculty :

There are 3 main faculty for accounting and I'm in a class size of no more than 25 people, I would say that the break down is good. The only issue is that you spend all of your days rotating between these 3.
