Tahnee Review at Memorial University Of Newfoundland [MUN], St. John's | Collegedunia

Memorial University at a Glance

6.8 /10

I wanted to move away from home (Nova Scotia) and Memorial was the cheapest option of tuition while still being able to get out of the province. I applied to 3-4 colleges, all of them being local besides Memorial. My graduation score from high school was 85% and I did get into all schools I applied to.

Course Curriculum :

I believe the course curriculum to be fair. There is room for a lot of electives which was nice. The only thing I really dislike is how many courses require a pre-requisite to get into- which really has dragged my degree from being completed as I can only do 1-2 courses a semester.

Exams :

There was no minimum score to get into this program- it is a self-declared degree. I originally wanted to do an International Bachelor of Business Admin, but it was a lot harder to get into, which is why I opted for a general BBA degree. The total credits for the program are 120 credit hours. When I first started with Memorial, there was a Math Placement exam which you would need to pass in order to take any of the offered math courses. If not passed, you would have to complete three semesters worth of ?Foundation Math?. This was extremely annoying and at times has made me regret choosing Memorial. It was almost as if starting from grade primary- with adding and subtracting- all the way up to calculus. These courses were a complete waste of time in my opinion, and to add- were the same prices as an actual course with credits. There were no credits offered for these foundation courses. Since then, the university has decided to remove this Math Placement Test as there was no longer funding. Now, student who apply can take a math course automatically.

Internship :

Yes, there are on campus jobs, such as working for the campus bar. The process is quite easy, and the staff are really great at helping work your hours around your class schedule. There are quite a few degrees as well that offer co-op, and I believe for some you can work directly with the university.

Fees :

Each course at Memorial is approximately $300-400, depending on whether or not it is an online course. There is about a $100 extra free for completing a course online. I did not receive any scholarships for my program and everything was paid through government loan. I would get approximately 10,000 per year to cover all costs- tuition, transportation, rent, groceries, etc. This ended up being more than enough for me to cover costs each semester.

Scholarship :

Yes, I have received Federal and Provincial student loans. The process was quite easy, and was mostly done online. After the first application, each additional year of funding is a much simpler process.

Examination Structure :

Most courses would have two midterms per semester and a final exam. For myself, as I do my courses online, I go to a local university and have an exam invigilator watch over- then my exams are sent back to the university for grading.

Faculty :

I am not too familiar with the faculty on campus as I am currently doing my courses online (I've moved back home to Nova Scotia). However, I know that memorial is the biggest university in Atlantic Canada, so I imagine the ratio is fair.

Hostel :

I lived on campus for my first two years- which was a huge help in many ways. Moving to Newfoundland not knowing in person, residence proves as a very encouraging way to make friends without having the pressure to go out of your own way. The meal hall was right across from my residence- a 30 second walk. This was extremely convenient, especially in the winter as Newfoundland weather is unpredictable. All of the residences were attached to underground tunnels as well, which meant a not even having to go outside to get to class!
