MA programs enable students to develop an excellent range of research skills and knowledge – valuable for those intending to eventually pursue jobs in a vast array of fields such as business, education, and government.
An MA in sociology from McGill is well-regarded among the world’s top universities and serves as an excellent launching off point for students intending to pursue doctoral studies.
This program culminates in a publishable-quality research paper that normally, but not necessarily, flows out of a paper written for one of the graduate seminars or an independent reading and research course.
All candidates for a sociology MA degree must complete the degree in three years.
Students must complete a 45-credit course.
Students may elect to pursue either the standard sociology MA non-thesis program or they may couple it with one of four ‘options’ in
- development studies,
- gender and women’s studies,
- medical sociology,
- population dynamics.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in sociology or in another relevant social science.
Students are required to demonstrate a knowledge of basic statistics.
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.3 or better out of a possible 4.0.

Indian Student Eligibility:

The university degree, described above, must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.3/4.0 or the equivalent, according to the grading scale on the transcript.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

Official Transcripts: Students need to submit a copy of their original transcripts.
Personal Statement: All applicants are required to submit a personal statement (maximum 1,000 words, double-spaced). The statement should: 1) outline the applicant’s areas of academic interest (e.g., proposed research topic) 2) identify faculty members of interest (e.g., possible supervisors) and with whom the applicant’s research interests align, and 3) discuss future academic and/or career plans.
Two Reference Letter: Students will choose letter writers who will be able to comment on their academic record and other experiences or relevant skill sets.
CV/Resume: including a summary of your academic background, professional experience, and other relevant activities (e.g., community involvement, volunteer work, etc.).
Writing Sample: All applicants are required to submit one research paper or publication in English or French (maximum 30 pages, double-spaced).
