LORs are formal letters written by professionals offering an unbiased third-party opinion on the applicant’s skills and knowledge. The Letters of Recommendation are asked by universities and the admission committee to ensure whether you will be a valuable addition to their classroom.
While Letter of Recommendation is not a mandatory requirement at many Hong Kong Universities, it plays a significant role wherever asked. It is masters and doctoral programs in Hong Kong, that need students to get 2-3 Letters of Recommendation.
Letter of Recommendation (LOR) for Hong Kong: General Guidelines
Majority of the universities asking students to submit LOR for Hong Kong follow a standardized format wherein the recommender writes the letter online. Furthermore, your letter of recommendation for Hong Kong must preferably be an academic LOR. Some other guidelines are mentioned below:
- LORs must be written on the official letterhead of the educational institutions or the organizations. These must be verifiable.
- The LOR needs to be stating the directly related qualities of the applicant that would be helpful in further studies.
- The letter must be containing factual information that can be substantiated if required.
- LOR must have the information related to co-scholastic activities, community services, and the ability of the candidate to work as the campus ambassador, if possible.
- Any achievement that is already highlighted somewhere else in the application need not be a part of the LOR.
- The LORs need to have the official phone number and email id of the referee on which the institution may contact him/her in case of any requirement.
- The writer should hold the right position and must be authorized to right the same.
- The writer must be agreeable to respond to the queries of the universities in case they arise at any point in time within the given time frame.

Generally, universities in Hong Kong do not have a mandatory requirement of LOR. Like Hong Kong Baptist University and Lingnan University have not specified any requirement for LORs in graduate courses or even research-based courses.
