The nature and grade of questions in the General Studies papers will be such that they can be answered by a well-educated person without any specialized study. The questions will be designed to assess a candidate's general knowledge of a number of topics relevant to a Civil Service career. The questions will most likely test the candidate's basic understanding of all relevant topics, as well as his or her ability to analyze and weigh in on conflicting socio economic goals, objectives, and demands. Candidates must deliver relevant, meaningful, and succinct responses.

Four of the nine exams are categorized as General Studies, while another Essay paper is only tangentially related to General Studies due to the topic selection process. Questions and information from literature, history, geography, political science, science, economy, and current events are included in General Knowledge, or as it is popularly referred to as General Studies.
