Phonics is a method of teaching children to read that involves connecting sounds (phonemes) with the symbols that represent them (graphemes, or letter groups). In primary schools, phonics is the process of learning to read. By the age of six or seven, the majority of children have learned to read. At the age of four or five, several children begin to think. Even if a child has a head start, she will not be able to maintain her advantage once school begins. The remaining students would most likely catch up in second or third grade.
