No knowledge of the ancient languages is required, but you will also be given the opportunity to learn some Greek or Latin if you wish to do so.All students take the same introductory Greek and Roman Civilisation module. This is divided equally between Greek history and culture and Roman history and culture.The Greek section includes a survey of Greek history from the Mycenaean period (c.1600BC) until the death of Alexander the Great (323BC), followed by an examination of selected key works of art, architecture (e.g. the Parthenon) and literature (e.g. Homer?s Iliad).The Roman section includes a survey of Roman history from the emergence of Etruscan civilisation (c.800BC) until the end of the first imperial dynasty with the death of Nero (AD68), followed by an examination of selected key works of art, architecture (e.g. the Colosseum) and literature (e.g. Virgil?s Aeneid).
