New Delhi: IIT Guwahati collabs with the Assam Government in order to enhance the development of the North-East region. The collaboration will include exploring the advanced Tea Technology, providing technological support to harness natural resources and so on.
An official release from IIT Guwahati has explained that the institute will provide aid to the research related to the usage of tea compounds in multiple sectors such as medicine, health and wellness.
“Efforts to highlight the importance of various types of tea and their rich ingredients will be carried out along with the state officials”, as stated by an IIT Guwahati spokesperson.
On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, the IIT Guwahati authority conducted a meeting with various concerned officials from the State Government regarding the future course of action and collaboration plans with various fields for the overall development of the region.

The Government delegation comprising officials from multiple fields such as Mines and Minerals, E-commerce, Industry, Public Enterprises, Transport was supervised by KK Dwivedi, Principal Secretary to the Assam Government. The IIT Guwahati team was led by Professor TG Sitharam.

“As per the request of the state government, IIT Guwahati will be very glad to contribute mainly in the areas focusing in the exploration of mines and minerals, commerce and entrepreneurship development, involvement of drones in various sectors, transport sector - Inland water transport, water buses, road safety, aspects related to skill development in multiple upcoming sectors and establishing various centres of excellence & state of the art laboratories at the institute”, as stated by Professor Sitharam.

The discussion also included a proposal to open a Mining Department at IIT Guwahati. The primary aim of the discussion was to develop ways to train the young students and make them ready for employment opportunities. This was also to plan actions regarding safe ways to harness abundant natural resources available throughout the region.
Dr. KK Dwivedi, also discussed the importance of setting up the School of Mines at the institute and Centres of Excellence in areas of inland waterways, promoting the Assamese traditional jewellery making, innovation in the tea sectors, vocational skill training leading to several startups and so on.
Along with the mining, IIT Guwahati also discussed the possibilities of arranging the International Road Safety Conclave to enhance the road safety and development of the Transport system.
Moreover, the Assam Government has also sought IIT Guwahati’s help and support in the proposed plan to set up the Assam Skill University. Under the supervision of the Engineering Department, a research and development facility is also proposed to be accommodated in several fields related to inland water transport systems.
