IITs have decided to quash the minimum eligibility criteria of 75% marks in board exams which was previously necessary to sit for JEE Advanced for admission to the colleges.
Following the speculation that IITs may drop the 75% board score criteria for admission, it was declared today officially by the Union HRD Minister. This was done as most of the board could not conduct examinations for all subjects and had to change the assessment criteria due to the Coronavirus Lockdown.
Earlier, boards like ICSE, CBSE had decided to declare results based on the papers already conducted. This provoked the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC), comprising of JEE Chairpersons from various IITs to discuss the disruption and change in the marking system.
The Union HRD Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal has written on his twitter handle that,” Due to the partial cancellation of class XII exams by several Boards, Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to relax the eligibility criterion for #JEE (Advanced) 2020 qualified candidates this time.”
The decision was welcomed by students as they would now have to think less about their board’s marks and can concentrate well on their JEE Advanced preparations.
There are currently 10,000 seats in IITs with around 5000 seats for general candidates.
N Anandakrishnan, Chairman of IIT Kanpur is of the opinion that the waiver in the eligibility restriction would give more students a shot at IITs.
But Officials of JIC think that the waiver of 75% minimum eligibility score would not make much difference in the admission procedure. Explaining the rationale behind their thoughts, there are very few students who are top scorers in JEE Advanced but could not achieve 75% marks in Class XII board exams.
