JNU to Reserve 5% of Total Admission Seats for PWDs Candidates; Read Full Story here

The Delhi High Court ordered Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to reserve 5% of total admission seats reserved for Person With Disabilities (PWDs). 

On October 13, 2020, the varsity conceded that after in accordance with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Admission 2020, the university failed to meet the reservation criteria for reserved category candidates. 

The seat intake for the PWD candidate, which has to be at least 5%, was not achieved. This states the violation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act.

In July 2020, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) stated during a court hearing that they never violated rules of reservation for PWD candidates. 

University stated that JNU is committed to providing the reservation for category candidates in all courses as per the act in the upcoming admission session 2021. 

As per the hearing, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) authorities assured the High Court that 5% of total admission seats will be reserved for Disabled Candidates for admission.

The bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jalan stated during a hearing, “At the end of admissions, when you count heads, the five percent reservation/induction should have been met. You are doing that, right,”. 

Monika Arora represented JNU during the Central Government standing. She added It is the duty of the university to ensure reserved seats for Person With Disabilities (PWDs) candidates. 

Submissions have been submitted to the High Court, stating that the university is now fulfilling the demand made by the High Court for Person With Disabilities (PWDs) candidate’s reservation.

In accordance with the stand of JNU, the High Court of India ordered to Dispose of Public interest litigation filed by Javed Abidi Foundation, the welfare of persons with disabilities. 

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) stated that JNU is not meeting the reservation criteria set for reserved category students of Person With Disabilities (PWDs) category for Admission 2020-2021.
