If you have cleared the SSC CGL exam and are looking for a technical post in a central government department, you may be disappointed to find out that this exam primarily focuses on candidates with humanities and commerce backgrounds. Therefore, it may be beneficial to explore other options that align more closely with your educational background and interests.

One possible path for individuals with a background in civil engineering is to consider the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam. This exam is specifically designed for those who have studied engineering and offers a range of technical posts in various government departments, including the railways, defense, and public works.

By pursuing the IES exam, you will be able to leverage your technical expertise and qualifications to secure a job that aligns with your interests and career goals. This can open up opportunities for professional development and advancement within your field and provide you with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in your work.

It is important to remember that both the SSC CGL and IES exams offer different career paths and job opportunities. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully consider your options and choose an approach that aligns with your interests, qualifications, and career aspirations.

IES and SSC CGL are both very different exams that will make you land in different grades of jobs as well. Each exam has its own pros and cons.

Let’s first understand what are the facts that are to be considered for IES and SSC CGL individually.

IES Exam:

  • Competition is minimal as you only compete with the aspirants of your branch.
  • Salary compensation is high as compared to the top posts through CGL exam.
  • If your core subjects are strong and you are willing to pursue a career in the same field then IES will be a more preferable choice.

SSC CGL:

  • The syllabus of the SSC CGL exam is easy and minimal.
  • The job stress is minimal.
  • The pay scale is good.
  • The job range is high. You can work in various departments such as railways, Income tax, etc.
  • If you want enough free time to prepare for other jobs then SSC CGL is ideal.

As discussed already, both exams have their own pros and cons but the difference lies in your interest. So, choose the exam based on which field you want to work in.
