Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship is offered to students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. The scholarship program is applicable to those who wish to pursue their UG and PG studies in Germany.

  • Confirmation of admission to a German university is mandatory.
  • Up to 40 scholarships are granted to the UG and PG students enrolled in universities in Germany.
  • A separate online Friedrich Ebert scholarship application must be submitted.
  • Recipients of UG and PG programs will be awarded 650 € per month and 1000 € per month respectively.
  • Annually more than 2000 students are awarded under the scholarship program.

Selections are based on two interview sessions conducted by the Foundation.  Application deadline for UG students varies, however, PG students can only apply before May 31.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship, applicants must fulfill eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Must be from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe
  • Exceptional academic records
  • Must have social and political involvement.
  • Pursuing a UG and PG program in a German university
  • FES supports almost all academic subjects allowing students from public/ state-approved universities and polytechnic or applied science colleges in Germany.

The scholarship is NOT available for Second-degree courses, study visits outside Germany, and the final phase of studies and PG in medicine.


Application Process

Applicants have to apply online for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarships. Applications should be received no later than :

  • Diploma/magister/state examination: On completion of 6th semester
  • Undergraduate Programs: On completion of 3 semesters
    • If 6 semesters: By the end of the 3rd semester
    • If 7 semesters: By the end of the 4th semester
  • Postgraduate Programs: On completion of 1st semester

While completing the form, they must provide proof of German proficiency like C 1, TestDAF.


Selection Process

Applications will be considered on the basis of academic excellence, financial need and social and political involvement in the young Democracy of the Weimar Republic.

Selected candidates will have to go through two individual interviews.

  • Interview Session I: Taken by one of the FES lecturers.
  • Interview Session II: Taken by one of the members of the FES Scholarship Committee.

Two reports will be generated based on these interviews and handed over to the AWA.

The final decision will be taken by the AWA. The AWA is an independent body comprising of university lecturers and people from fields of science, politics, art, and media. Recipients will be notified by AWA and grants will be provided to them.


Grant Details

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students who show excellent academic performance and their social and political involvement. 40 scholarships are awarded to students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe admitted to German universities.

Selected students will get a monthly scholarship and additional benefits that are given below:

  • 276 € for  family allowance, if applicable
  • refund of health care costs
  • Income exceeding 400 € monthly will be credited against the scholarship.

The scholarship holders are expected to be involved in:

  • Extra-curricular activities and seminars s of FES campus groups.
  • Students should continue and intensify their socio-political commitment.

At the end of each term, a report will be sent to FES which describes the scholar’s current academic performance and his/her social engagement.
