Ellis R. Ott Scholarship for Applied Statistics and Quality Management

Ellis R. Ott Scholarship for Applied Statistics and Quality Management is offered to students who wish to pursue higher education in the field of statistics.

Students pursuing a master’s degree or higher degree from one of the US or Canadian universities with a concentration in applied statistics and quality management are eligible.

Up to 3 awards of $ 7500 are given in each of two categories:

  • Pursuing master’s degrees as their next academic goal
  • Pursuing doctor’s degrees as their next academic goal.

The courses of applied statistics and quality management include theory and application in the following areas:

  • Statistical decision-making
  • Statistical inference
  • Experimental design
  • Analysis and Interpretation of data
  • Statistical process control
  • Quality control
  • Quality assurance
  • Quality improvement
  • Quality management and Related fields.

External application along with required documents must be sent via post no later than April 01. Selection is based on academic achievement, participation in campus activities and LOR(S).

Eligibility Criteria

Students who wish to secure the Ellis R. Ott Scholarship for Applied Statistics and Quality Management must fulfill eligibility requirements given below:

  • Either enrolled or are planning to take admission in masters or doctorate program in any Canadian or US Universities.
  • Must study in the field of statistics and quality management
  • Must have GPA scores of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 point scale or an equivalent score in any field of UG level.

Students are considered ineligible for the scholarship if :

  1. Enrolled in online programs.
  2. Are relatives of the Governing Board or ASQ Statistics Division Council members.
  3. Previous award winners

Application Process

Students who want to secure the Ellis R. Ott Scholarship for Applied Statistics and Quality Management have to complete the application form.

Along with application form, students must submit documents listed below:

  • CV
  • LOR from college professors.
  • Academic Transcripts
  • Essay describing the career goals, educational qualifications, and reasons for seeking the scholarship. It should not be longer than one page, minimum size 10 point type.

Strong LOR increases the chances of selection for the scholarship. The governing Board considers it seriously while reviewing the application of students.

Note: LOR should also include comments on all-round abilities of a student with special emphasis on leadership quality in the field of applied statistics and quality management and comments on the education qualification of the students.


Selection Process

Applications of students are reviewed by the Scholarship Governing Board for the selection of students. The following factors are considered while selecting the candidates:

  • Academic achievement, including honors courses.
  • Career objectives of the student.
  • Faculty recommendations.
  • Credit is given to Industrial exposure including part-time work and internships undertaken by the student.


Grant Details

Ellis R. Ott Scholarship for Applied Statistics and Quality Management is granted by the Statistics Division of the American Society for Quality.

The ASQ statistics division aims at promoting statistical thinking amongst students for quality and productivity improvement.

Annually the scholarships are awarded to six meritorious students.

Students who want to obtain the scholarship must submit application form no later than April 01.
