RD Sethna Scholarships

The RD Sethna Scholarships are offered to only Indian students who wish to pursue higher education in Indian universities or abroad. The scholarship is merit-based and is offered as an educational loan to cover all the expenses of the student for his/ her graduation.

  • Students undertaking scientific, technical, industrial or commercial studies in India or abroad can apply for this scholarship.
  • Recipients will receive a loan scholarship of INR 10,000.
  • A male guarantor who is a permanent resident of Mumbai is required to apply for the scholarship.
  • The scholarship is refundable to the organization with an interest as per the terms of the agreement.
  • External application to be submitted by post or in person.

The application deadline for study in India is August 31 and to study abroad is May 31.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for RD Sethna Scholarships, applicants must satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must pass Secondary School Certificate Examination with at least 50% or higher scores.
  • Must be admitted to a college or university in India or abroad for higher studies.
  • Applicants who have secured admission to US universities or Institutions must enclose a copy of the Form I-20
  • Must have a male loan guarantor who is a permanent resident in Mumbai.
  • The guarantor should have a monthly income of at least
    • INR 15,000 to pursue overseas graduation
    • INR 10,000 to pursue graduation from India.

Application Process

Applications can be submitted in person or by post. The application form can be obtained from the Trust Office by visiting the office or by requesting the form via post.

Postal requests for the scholarship applications require payment of INR 50 by a postal order or a demand draft in favor of the R D Sethna Scholarship Fund.

A self-addressed and Rs.10/- stamped envelope of size 23 cm * 10 cm should accompany the postal request. It should be mentioned whether the scholarship is required for undertaking studies in India or abroad.

The applications should be filled in legible handwriting along with the following supporting documents.

  • Academic Transcripts.
  • Copy of admission letter to the college, institution or university
  • A copy of Form I-20 is required from applicants who have secured admission to institutions or universities in the USA.
    • For continuing studies in India, provide the receipt of admission fees paid to institution or college.
  • Salary certificate or income tax assessment order of the parents and the proposed guarantor of the applicant.
  • A passport size photograph of the applicant.
  • Two LOR from permanent residents in India.
  • Prospective students to colleges in India shall submit Proof of recognition granted to the college by the Government of India.

Application Timeline

The timeline of applications for RD Sethna Scholarships is as follows.

  • Opening of Applications: April 01
  • Closing of Application for study abroad: May 31
  • Closing of Application for Study in India: August 31

Selection Process

The Chief Executive of RD Sethna Scholarship Fund administers all related activities and scrutinizes all the scholarship applications as per the terms and conditions determined by the trustees.

The selection process of the scholarship is based on the following factors.

  • Strength of academic records.
  • The financial status of the parents of the applicant.
  • LOR

Selected candidates will be informed of the grant. The grant is paid to the applicant as regular installments.


Grant Details

The grant is paid to the applicant as regular installments. The value of installments may vary for different applicants according to the granted loan amount and is solely based upon the discretion of the trustees of the RD Sethna Scholarship Fund.

To receive the scholarship grant, the guarantor has to submit the following documents:

  • A joint and several demand promissory notes.
  • An agreement in the prescribed Form.
  • Receipts and acknowledgments in the prescribed form.

Applicants will be notified of securing the scholarship grant and all formalities related including executing of the above-mentioned documents have to be completed within four weeks from the notification date.

Terms and conditions of the scholarships

  • Loan scholarships will be granted in installments only.
  • All the documents submitted by the applicant must be certified by a Gazetted Officer or an SEM or ahead of any recognized University/ institution where the applicant has studied or is studying.
  • Recipients have to avail the loan scholarship within six weeks from the date when they are granted and if the recipient or his guarantor fails to submit the documents within four weeks, the grant will be canceled.
  • Applicants must take a Life Endowment policy for a sum equivalent or in excess of the loan scholarship on his life for a period of not more than 20 years (if the applicants have any existing policy covering the loan amount, they can assign the same to the trustees.

Additional Grant Requirements:

Recipients should submit the following additional documents to avail grants above INR 10,000.

  • A copy of the standing instructions to the bank regarding direct debit payment of insurance premium for the scholarship.
  • Acknowledgment of the aforesaid standing instructions by the bank.
  • Acknowledgment of the aforesaid standing instructions from the insurance company.
