JN Tata Endowment Scholarship

JN Tata Endowment Scholarship, a one-time loan scholarship program, is designed for Indian students beginning higher education in an international university.

  • The loan scholarship amount ranges between INR 1,00,000 and INR 10,00,000.
    • Scholars do not necessarily qualify for the maximum reward amount.
  • Applications for the JN Tata Loan scholarship 2021 will close on March 7, 2023.
    • Registration window closed on March 7, 2023.
  • The selection process takes place in 3 stages- initial screening, online test, and interview session.
  • A list of recipients will be released in the first week of July.

Selected scholars may be recommended for a gift scholarship of up to INR 75,000 and a partial travel allowance of up to INR 50,000. Gift scholarships are offered on the basis of the recipient’s academic performance at their chosen university to study abroad.

Recipients must repay the loan scholarship in 5 equal installments of 20% between the third and seventh years. They must begin to repay earlier than year three if they have started earning.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates planning to apply JN Tata Endowment Scholarship for Higher Education must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Indian citizens
  • Academic Qualification: UG degree from Indian University.
  • Academic Score: At least 60% in the last academic exam.
  • Upper age limit: 45 years as on June 30, 2023.

The scholarship program is also available to applicants

  • beginning the second year of their education in a university abroad.
    • Applicable for only 2-year courses.
  • awaiting results and/or are in the final year of their degree.

The JN Tata Endowment Scholarship for Indian students is NOT available for applicants who have already applied for the loan scholarship for the same program.


Application Process

Application process for the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship is described below:

Step I: Register via email ID. Subsequent correspondence will be via email only.

Step II: Eligible candidates will be emailed a one-time password which will be valid for 48 hours. The password must be changed within 48 hours.

Step III: Complete the online application form. Candidates must not leave any field blank.

Step IV: Submit the required student supporting documentation.

Student Supporting Documentation

  • Scanned copies of official documents such as Transcripts.
  • Statement of Purpose (500-800 words): It should be addressed to ‘Trustees of JN Tata Endowment’. The SOP should be in a particular format and must answer the following questions:
    • What is your course and why you have chosen it?
    • Are you continuing your undergraduate stream or moving to a new stream? If new, what explains the change?
    • What are your expectations for the postgraduate program?
    • Do you have any experience in the chosen field? How?
    • If you already have the experience, what additional skills do you hope to gain?
    • How does your program fulfill your needs and interests?
    • What are your career plans?
  • One Letter of Recommendation: The LOR must be from a college professor. In case the applicant is working, he/she needs to get a LOR from the employer.
    • Candidates must mention the recommender’s name, designation, and department, name of the college/university/organization, city, contact numbers and their official email ID.

The application will be considered complete only if the LOR is Submitted.


Selection Process

The Selection Process of JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship is rigorous and comprises of three levels:

  • Initial Screening
  • Online test
  • Interview

First Level: Initial Screening

Applications will be reviewed on the basis of the following factors

  • Consistent Academic Performance
  • Involvement in Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular activities.
  • GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS scores
  • Statement of Purpose

Shortlisted candidates will receive updates via emails.

Second Level: Online Test

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to appear for an Online test based on the lines of Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). For Tata Loan Scholarship 2023, the online test will be conducted on April 12, 2023.

Candidates shortlisted after the TSA test will be invited for an interview session. However, before that, the candidates must upload scanned copies of student supporting documents.

Third Level: Interview Session

The interview will be technical in the sense that candidates will be tested on the understanding of their subject. They will be examined in detail about the depth of their studies.

  • The candidates who are applying in their second year will be tested on the knowledge they gained during their first year.
  • The interview is conducted by the Director of Endowment and a Subject Expert in Mumbai or through Skype.

Note: Selection for interview sessions is no guarantee of receiving the Tata scholarship for Indian students pursuing higher education.


Grant Details

JN Tata Endowment Scholarship is awarded to candidates who wish to pursue full-time Masters, Ph.D., Postdoctoral, Research Fellowship in any field overseas.

  • The amount varies from INR 1,00,000 to INR 10,00,000.
  • All the selected candidates are not eligible for the maximum amount.
  • Candidates must secure at least 60 % marks in their last academic performance.
  • Statement of Purpose and Letter of Recommendation must be submitted.
  • The application starts in December.
  • The entire application procedure is online.
  • The selection procedure consists of three rounds
    • Initial Screening
    • Online Test
    • Interview

The results are announced in the first week of July through email.

Formalities to be completed if one is selected for the scholarship:

  • The selected candidate and his guardian have to visit the Administration Office to complete the necessary formalities. They must have a prior appointment and must have obtained a visa.
  • Basically one needs to submit the documentary evidence that they have the capacity to repay the loan and thus enter a legal agreement with Trustees.
  • One needs to repay the loan in five installments between the third and seventh year.
