IELTS exam score is one of the key factors for international students seeking admission to any university abroad. The British Council IELTS Award 2021 is an opportunity for international students present in Germany to receive financial aid based on their IELTS Test scores. 

  • Applicants must take the  IELTS exam in an authorized British Council test center in Germany.
  • IELTS Award application must be submitted before June 30, 2022.
  • Recipient(s) will get a maximum award fund of 10,000 GBP which can only be used for tuition fees.
  • Eligible applicants must have secured a minimum overall IELTS test score of 6.5.
  • Be able to provide an acceptance letter from the relevant educational organisation by before July 31, 2022.

The British Council IELTS Award 2022-23 is applicable for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme taught in English at a university or other institution of higher education in Germany or abroad, which accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements .

For 2023-2024,application forms are yet to be announced.

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the British Council IELTS Award 2021, applicants must ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria of IELTS. An ideal applicant must

  • be 18 years or above on July 31, 2022
  • have taken the IELTS test at a British Council center in Germany. Check IELTS Sample papers.
    • Received IELTS Test Report dated between June 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022.
  • achieved a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5.
    • At least 6.5 in each component of the IELTS Test.
  • be planning to enroll for a full-time UG or PG program taught in English at a German university. 
    • Applicable for the academic session 2022-23.
    • Tuition fee of the program should be 3,000 GBP or above
  • be able to submit the acceptance letter from a previous educational institution by July 31, 2022.

Application Process

The application process for British Council IELTS Award 2021 is a two-step procedure. 

  1. Take an IELTS exam at an authorized British Council Center in Germany.
  2. Complete and Submit the IELTS 2022-23 Award online application form by June 30, 2022, before 2 pm (German time)

Applicants are advised to apply for admission at their chosen universities in Germany as they need to provide a letter of acceptance by July 31, 2021.


Selection Process

The British Council IELTS Award 2021 selection process comprises of several stages:

Stage I: Initial screening of applications to ensure the fulfillment of 2022 British Council IELTS Award eligibility criteria.
Stage II: Shortlisting five applicants based on their IELTS Award applications and personal statements.
Stage III: The Council emails all the applicants to inform them about the status of the IELTS 2021 Award application.
Stage IV: Shortlisted students are invited for an interview session by the panel of British Council experts.

  • Before the interview, students will be asked to give a short presentation. 

Stage V: Shortlisted students have to submit a copy of the following documents:

  • IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)
  • authorized ID proof like passport
  • Letter of acceptance from their chosen German university.

Failure to provide the required documents, before July 31, 2021, will result in the removal from the British Council IELTS 2021 Award shortlist.

The name of the selected British Council IELTS 2021 Award recipient will be announced by the end of July 2021.


Grant Details

The British Council IELTS Award is designed for only those candidates who have taken their IELTS test between June 01, 2021, and June 30, 2022, at a British Council center in Germany. 

The recipient(s) will be awarded the scholarship amount of 10,000 GBP, to assist with their tuition fee. The tuition fee of the planned course should not be less than 3,000 GBP and the offer letter should be in the possession of the applicants on or before July 31, 2022.

The Council has established a specific set of requirements for the applicants of the IELTS 2022 Award. One of the key requirements is that the applicants must meet the minimum overall IELTS test score requirements:

IELTS Overall Band Score 6.5 or above
IELTS Each Component Score 6.5 or higher

British Council IELTS Award is generally given to those who are able to demonstrate the substantial positive difference their higher studies can make towards the community and their country. 

This award can be clubbed with any other award if that covers only the partial tuition fee. But if the applicant already has a full tuition fee covering grant/scholarship he/she is not eligible to take this award.
