Young Professionals Program

Young Professionals Program (YPP) presents a unique opportunity for the young students planning to build their career by bagging the top technical and managerial roles in the World Bank Group (WBG). The program offers recipients a chance to pursue their studies in US.

  • Applications process for IFC and MIGA profiles will open in June, 2023. 
  • YPP program provides a 5-year renewable term contract to the shortlisted young professionals.
  • Designed for individuals pursuing fields like public health, urban planning, agriculture, and economics in the USA.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to development, proven academic success, and leadership capability.
    • Women and persons with disabilities are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in the English language is mandatory, whereas proficiency in any one WBG languages is desirable. 
    • Accepts ELP tests are IELTS, TOEFL, PTE.

 The Young Professionals Program has already aided nearly 1800 professionals from nearly 120 countries to attain their desired designations starting from entry-level to Vice Presidents and Managing Directors. The WBG-YPP is considered as the most prestigious selection program provided by the World Bank.

Eligibility Criteria

An eligible applicant of Young Professionals Program must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Citizen and residents of the World Bank Group’s member country such as India.
    • Born on or after October 1, 1988
  • Obtained a Ph.D. or Master’s degree and relevant work experience
  • Proficient in the English language or have taken an IELTS or TOEFL or PTE exam.
  • Proficiency is desired in one or more WBG’s working languages
    • Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
    • This proficiency is NOT mandatorily required though.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the fields related to the development
    • or continued academic study at the doctoral level
  • Specialization in Economics, Education, Public health, Engineering, and fields that are relevant to WBG Operations.

Applicants must note that the fulfillment of these requirements will not just make them eligible for the scholarship, but also suitable for their future in the US and its higher education system.

  • Answer all the questions (all questions with an asterisk—*— mark are mandatory).
  • Provide valid personal information and contact the organizers
    • It is the applicant’s responsibility to email the concerned organizers.

Student Supporting Documentation

  • An updated CV
  • Academic certificates
  • One Essay
  • Ph.D. Dissertation/Master’s Thesis documents and synopsis
  • 3 Professional or academic recommendation letters

Selection Process

The competition for the Young Professionals Program is massive. The organizers receive thousands of applications each year for a limited number of positions. 

The selection panel of the YPP focuses on the factors listed below:

  • Portrayal of commitment and passion for international development.
  • Outstanding academic credentials and certifications.
  • Demonstration of excellent leadership qualities and client management skills.
  • Prior experience in international development country work culture.

After the shortlisting of the applicant’s, the committee invites the students for an interview session. 

Young Professionals Program Interview Process

In the interview session, applicants are scrutinized and evaluated on the following three factors:

Client Orientation Commitment to Clients; Results Orientation; Integrity and Ethics
Professional Expertise Technical Expertise; Strategic Perspective; Problem Analysis
Team Leadership Teamwork; Listening and Communication; Innovation; Negotiation

Note: Due to COVID-19 the interviews and assessments are conducted online. In this process following factors are assessed:  

  • The candidate exhibits excellent client engagement, team leadership skills.  
  • Work-Experience  
  • The candidate’s ability to demonstrate knowledge of relevant sector trends  
  • Listening and Communication skills  

Grant Details

The Young Professionals Program provides a one-time grant in the first paycheck to cover the cost of relocation. Other benefits of this scholarship program:

  • Salary: International Competitive Salary to professionals at an entry-level position in the WBG on the basis of their education and professional experience.
  • Health, Life, Accident, and Other Insurance Programs:
    • Young Professionals can choose from three comprehensive medical/dental benefit plans.
    • It also provides basic life and accident insurance to all staff at no cost, and staff can elect optional life and accident insurance plans.
    • WBG offers coverage to the disabeled staff at no cost.
  • Pension Plan: An approximate sum or a pension is offered, as per the eligibility of the staff.
  • Mobility Premium:
    • Financial benefits to cover the expenses are offered to the staff member, for a fixed time period.
    • Not available for U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents based in Washington, DC.
  • Financial Assistance: A 2-year interest-free settling-in loan to the relocated professionals

Young Professionals Program 2023 Application Timeline

  • June–: Application process starts
  • June–September: Applications Reviewed to ensure the candidates’ eligibility.
    • Updation of the selection of the first-round candidates.
  • October: Technical review of second-round candidates. Candidates are selected for the interview round.
  • Mid-November: Late December: Status update to final selected candidates for interview
    • Interviews are mostly scheduled at WBG headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA and a regional office in Paris, France
  • December–January: YPP interviews are conducted
  • February: Decisions and offers are communicated
  • September: New YP cohorts start
