The International Amigo Scholarship is awarded each year to the international students of The University of New Mexico in the USA. It is a type of fee-waiver of the non-resident portion of students towards their tuition.

Eligibility Criteria

International Amigo Scholarship requires applicants to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be seeking admission to a Master's or Ph.D. program at the University of New Mexico.
  • Previous university grades should be a minimum of 3.0
  • The nomination of the applicant's graduate program
  • Full-time in-person graduate degree program students are eligible
  • A student should have a non-immigrant student visa status to the USA (Preferably visa holders- F1, J1)
  • A student should be doing UNM research, project assistantship or teaching.
  • No previous attendance at the current application degree level at UNM.

Application Process

All the graduate students of the University of New Mexico will be considered for the International Amigo scholarship as soon as they accept a place to a UNM graduate program and the nomination is done by the respective department.

  • There is no separate application required for the International Amigo Scholarship.
  • Applicants are selected by the academic departments of the university
  • It will be awarded in departmentally-representative fashion.
  • A department can receive no more than 10 total Amigo offers, once the nomination priority deadline passes.

The International Amigo scholarship will be awarded by nomination priority, before February 15th for fall semester admissions and before September 15th for Spring semester admissions. Since the International Amigo scholarships are limited in number, therefore the Graduate departments are told to submit nominations.

  • Step I: Graduate departments will nominate students via the International Admission decision form.
  • Step II: The screening of the nominations for eligibility is done by the Office of International Admissions.
  • Step III: Then the Office of International Admissions notifies the awarded applicants through an email.
  • Step IV: Awarded applicants need to submit the scholarship acceptance form, their official transcripts, degree certificate, and needed financial documentation.
  • Step V: The awardee has to accept the award and submit all the documents within the specified deadline.

Note: If an applicant accepts an assistantship, the graduate department should notify the Office of International Admissions regarding the same. Late submissions are not accepted.


Selection Process

Applications of the International Amigo Scholarship are analyzed and evaluated by a panel of selectors at the University of New Mexico. The recipients of the International Amigo Scholarship are selected on the basis of factors like,

  • Academic Excellence
  • Past Achievements & Experience
  • Graduate course Eligibility requirements
  • Maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 GPA each semester.

Renewal of Scholarship

The scholarship will be renewed only if the student satisfies the following given conditions:

  • The scholarship is renewed for up to 2 years for master's degree students and 4 years for doctoral degree students.
  • Applicants must complete 9 graduate-level credit hours each semester and should have a minimum of 3.0 GPA each semester.
  • Courses with grades of WF, WP, W, WNC, NC, NR and I Audit will not be counted toward the semester hours.
  • As a graduate-level scholarship, applicants are expected to enroll in the graduate-level course work within the time frame of scholarship awarded.
  • Students who accept an assistantship will forfeit the International Amigo Scholarship, during their graduate study at UNM.

Grant Details

Applicants of the International Amigo Scholarship are required to complete their graduate admission at the University of New Mexico and satisfy the renewability requirements of the scholarship in order to receive the continuing benefit of the scholarship, during their course of study.

An applicant must understand and accept the terms and conditions of the International Amigo Scholarship carefully, before applying for the scholarship. The scholarship will be treated canceled if the applicant withdraws from their Graduate program before completion.
