Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship is a merit-based grant which is awarded to one Indian scholar each year. Funded by the Government of India, the grant offers the recipient a chance to study/research at St. Antony College as a Junior Research Fellow.

The primary aim of Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship is to promote specialization in modern Indian Studies in the field of History, Political Science and Economics. Initially, the scholarship is awarded for one year only. The tenure may be extended by one more year, depending upon the performance of the candidate at St. Antony’s College, Oxford (U.K.).

The fellowship covers tuition fees, administration charges, and travel allowances and provides a stipend against college lunches and six high table dinner. The table below gives an estimated cost of the fellowship amount for one year:

The recipient of Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship is also given return Air travel allowance, in an Economy class. The travel allowance is also applicable for the scholar’s spouse, only if he/she stays in the UK along with the scholar for a continuous period of one year. However, if the spouse lives with the candidate, then the candidate will have to meet the expenditure of the spouse by himself/herself, as the fellowship amount is given only for a single person.

The Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship award is distributed annually and is renewable for the next one year depending upon the performance of the student in the University and the financial need of the recipient.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship, each applicant needs to establish eligibility on several grounds.

Academic Qualifications

  • Consistent academic performance
  • Minimum 60% in post-graduation
  • Ph.D. degree with a specialization in Economics, History, or Political Science.

Apart from the academic qualifications listed above, the candidate must also fulfill the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: Be an Indian national currently residing in India.
  • Age: Must be within the age group of 30-40 years.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at UG or PG level.

Note: If the applicant has studied abroad for more than six months, it is then mandatory for them to live in India for at least three consecutive years. Only after fulfilling this condition, an applicant can apply for Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship. Moreover, they must mention the specific dates indicating the period of their stay.


Application Process

Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship applications are accepted through an online process. As a prospective applicant, they have to register at the official MHRD website.

Documents Required for Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

Along with the Ms. Agatha Harrision Memorial Fellowship 2020 applications, the following documents must also be uploaded:

  • Self-attested degrees/ certificates of all previous examinations. The records must include the DOB.
  • In the case of foreign degrees and diplomas, proof of equivalence should be furnished (Certified by the Competent Authority).
  • Experience letter/certificate of Employment
  • Research Proposal: Precise program of study/research (at least 500 words) stating the justification of their research/ study in the U.K.
  • Photograph & Signature: Upload recent passport-size photograph and signature. The dimensions and size of each should be 200x230 pixels and 530 Kb respectively.

After the successful submission of the application form, along with the stated conditions, the names of the candidates for Interviews will be published on the website of the MHRD Ministry and, a confirmation mail will be sent to the shortlisted candidates.


Selection Process

Merely fulfillment of the Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship eligibility and completion of the application does not guarantee selection. The MHRD selection committee scrutinizes each application based on which a list is compiled, shortlisting the selected candidates.

These candidates are sent an invitation letter for an individual interview session. After the interview, the committee announces the selected name of the candidate for Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship. This name is displayed on the MHRD Ministry website. The decision of the committee is final and cannot be challenged.

Terms and Conditions of Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship 2020

  • The decision of the selection committee is final.
  • The applicant should carry out his study/ research in the UK.
  • Applications should be submitted in English only.
  • Application and the documents once submitted, will not be returned in any case.
  • Applicant should have completed his/her tertiary education in English medium only.
  • Applications will not be accepted after the deadline. There are chances of disqualification of the candidate if the application is not submitted in time.

Applicants must return to work in their home country after the completion of their studies.
