Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Holland Scholarship- Leiden University, applicants must fulfill the eligibility requirements set by the university and Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. Applicants must

  • not be EU/EEA, Swiss/Surinamese passport holder.
  • not be eligible for support from the Dutch study finance system.
  • not be a former student of any universities in the Netherlands
  • have completed pre-university studies outside the Netherlands.

Holland Scholarship- Leiden University is available for international applicants enrolled in one of the English-taught Bachelor’s programs at Leiden University. A few of the eligible programs are:

Note: UK Passport holders are not eligible for the incoming application batch i.e., for bachelor’s programs starting in September 2023.


Application Process

The application process for applying for a Holland Scholarship- Leiden University is simple and does not require any additional application form. An applicant must comply with the following steps to apply for the Holland Scholarship.

  • A letter of motivation is to be written (max 500 words), specifically for the scholarship, explaining and mentioning the academic strengths, achievements, and other extracurricular accomplishments/activities participated in.
  • Complete an application for admission to Leiden University is one of the above-mentioned taught-bachelor program before February 1
  • The Holland Scholarship is needed to be mentioned in the online admission application and uploaded with the motivation letter.

Note- Applicants are not required to mention their financial need as it is not considered a selection criterion for the Holland Scholarship.


Selection Process

A selection committee will review and go through all the received applications. The major points taken into consideration for Holland Scholarship are:

  • previous academic achievements,
  • letter of motivation.

The outcome of the process would be intimated to the student by the Leiden University Scholarship Team, in about 6 weeks after the deadline, i.e., after February 1, 2023.


Grant Details

The Leiden University offers the Holland Scholarship to its international students who sought after pursuing an English taught bachelor’s program from their university. The award amount is € 5,000, offered once to the student after they reach the Netherlands for their first year of studies.

  • Holland scholarship is not a full scholarship but a contribution to a student’s study costs for the first year of study at Leiden University.
  • Recipients are required to get a student visa to the Netherlands.
  • Proof of sufficient funds is required to get their student visa/ residence permit application.
  • After their arrival at the university, the award amount will be transferred into their Dutch bank account in one installment.

Once an applicant receives the Holland Scholarship, they must make sure to accept the scholarship award by completing the Acceptance Form- Holland Scholarship. Any changes with the recipient’s nationality, residence permit, possible student financial support, etc. must be notified to the university as soon as possible.
