Holland Scholarships are awarded to students who want to study in the Netherlands. These scholarships are financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture & Science and various Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences.

Utrecht University Holland Scholarships are awarded by the Dutch Ministry together with Utrecht University and the association of universities in the Netherlands and universities of applied sciences.

  • International students from outside of the EU/ EEA countries are eligible for these scholarships.
  • A scholarship amount of EUR 5,000, EUR 10,000 or EUR 15,000 is awarded in the first year of studies.
  • A total number of 20 Utrecht University Holland Scholarships are available for the academic year 2023- 2024.
  • The scholarship is available for regular on-campus international master's degree programs.
  • Applicants need to apply for the applications by January 31, 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

The Utrecht University Holland Scholarships are open for all the international students outside the EEA (i.e., except the EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) applying for various international master programs at Utrecht University.

The applicants must ensure to fulfill the following eligibility requirements for availing the Utrecht University Holland Scholarships:

  • Must be an international student outside of the EU/ EEA holding a student visa to the Netherlands.
  • Applicants must have applied for an international master’s degree program at Utrecht University with a start date of September 1, 2023.
  • Applicants must not have enrolled at an educational institute in Netherland before
  • Applicants must ensure that they meet the program-specific entry requirements

To be eligible for the Utrecht University Holland Scholarships, applicants must make sure to complete their applications by January 31, 2023. 


Application Process

The Holland Scholarship requires a separate application from international students applying for the Master’s program at Utrecht University. The applications are available for students from November 1,2022

The documents required for the scholarship application include:

  • letter of motivation explaining-
    • the relevance of the applicant’s time in the Netherlands and at Utrecht University
    • a highlight of career goals.
  • A financial resource statement demonstrating the ability to cover the remaining costs.

The application process for applying for Holland Scholarship at Utrecht University is:

  • Submit an admission application for the Master’s program at the university
  • Login to the Osiris Online Application using the username and password
  • Click on ‘New application’
  • Complete the form by answering the questions asked
  • Upload the required documents-
    • Motivation letter
    • Statement of financial resources
  • Submit the completed application

Applicants must make sure to submit all the required documents on time and submit the applications before the deadlines.


Selection Process

The Holland Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit. The decision regarding the award of a scholarship is taken based on factors such as:

  • Academic background
  • Motivation Letter
  • Quality and feasibility of the applicant’s financial plan.
  • The ability to comply with the conditions necessary to obtain a Dutch visa/residence permit

Applicants are not notified about the scholarship until they have been successfully completed the admission process at Utrecht University and been admitted. Also, the results are notified only after the scholarship deadline.


Grant Details

Non-EU/EEA students looking to pursue their studies in the Netherlands can apply for Utrecht University Holland Scholarships. A total of 22 scholarships are available for students enrolled at Utrecht University in a Master's program for the 2023-24 academic year.

  • The scholarship amount received by the student amounts to EUR 5,000, EUR 10,000 or EUR 15,000 for the first year of their studies only.
  • The scholarship application will only be processed if the student has also submitted the admission application to a Master's program at Utrecht.
  • Applicants who have enrolled in the master’s program commencing in September are only the ones eligible for Utrecht University Holland Scholarships.

The applicants will not be informed about the final decision regarding the award of scholarship before the deadline. The final decision will only be conveyed to the applicants after they secure an unconditional admission to the master’s degree program at Utrecht University.
