Holland Scholarships: Eligibility, Application and Selection Criteria

Holland Scholarships

Holland Scholarships are designed for international students, who are not from the European Economic Area(EEA), and desire to pursue their higher studies in the Netherlands. This scholarship program is available in around 38 universities in the Netherlands, for students pursuing their bachelor's or master's degree.

  • Financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science together with Dutch universities
  • Academic merit is the main point of selection for the Holland Scholarships.
  • A scholarship amount of 5,000 EUR to 15,000 EUR is awarded based on the enrolled university.
  • Not a full-tuition scholarship waiver, awarded against first-year tuition fee
  • The deadline to apply for the Holland Scholarships is June 01, 2023.
    • Scholarship decisions will be announced soon in August.

Not all bachelor's or master's degree programs of participating universities are covered by the Holland Scholarships. Students are required to check if their chosen program at the participating universities is eligible for the Holland Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

Along with admission to any of the participating universities, to be considered for the Holland Scholarships, the applicants must fulfill the following requirements

  • be a non-EEA citizen
  • have applied for either a full-time bachelor’s or a full-time master’s program at any of the participating Dutch universities.
  • meet the specific requirements of the institution of their choice
  • must not have a prior degree from any educational institution of the Netherlands

Holland Scholarship is awarded only once and for the first year of study. Applicants looking for ways to fund their studies in the Netherlands can check and apply for Holland Scholarships.


Application Process

Applicants must be accepted at one of the eligible universities/ colleges in the Netherlands for a full-time bachelor's or master's program. The process for the Holland Scholarships application is given below:

  • Choose a course and institution. Check whether both are present in the list of universities offering the Holland Scholarship program.
  • Check the individual entry requirements on the chosen university's program webpage and begin with the registration process.
  • Complete the scholarship application form. After the confirmation of admission (this might vary for each university, applicants must check the specific requirements before applying), fill in the form for the scholarship application.
  • Submit the required documents.

The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science provide application deadline for applying to Holland Scholarship as June 1, 2023. Applicants can apply before application deadline.


Selection Process

The selection of the Holland Scholarships is solely based on the academic merit and financial need of the applicant. The selection process for the scholarship program includes the following stages:

  • Application Acceptance and Pre-selection via the university applied to by the candidate.
  • File Review and Selection of Recipients: the sponsoring body reviews the application files of shortlisted applicants.
  • Students selected for the scholarship are announced. The university will notify those students who have been awarded the scholarship separately.

The scholarship notification is sent to the students via email within a few weeks to a month after the deadline. The scholarship amount is transferred to a Dutch account once the student reaches the university. Recipients are required to get a student visa to the Netherlands.


Grant Details

Holland Scholarships are available for all international students outside of EEA who want to pursue their studies in the Netherlands. The selected students will receive the scholarship only once in their first year of study.

  • Holland scholarships are not a full scholarship but a contribution to a student’s study costs for the first year of study.
  • Proof of sufficient funds is required to get their student visa/ residence permit application.
  • After their arrival at the university, the award amount will be transferred into their Dutch bank account in one installment.
