Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Ngau Boon Keat Postgraduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria. Applicants must:

  • be a citizen of New Zealand or an international student
  • be enrolled in a part-time or full-time eligible program at the University of Canterbury that include-
    • Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
    • Master of Engineering Studies in Mechanical Engineering
    • Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • meet the admission and enrollment requirements for the eligible programs at the University of Canterbury by December 10.

Applicants must make sure to complete the admission process at the University of Canterbury, enroll and hold an admission offer by June 1 of the year following the year of application.


Application Process

To apply for Ngau Boon Keat Postgraduate Scholarship, applicants can fill the scholarship application form eight weeks before the closing deadline. The candidates first need to apply to an eligible postgraduate course at the University of Canterbury.

The following documents shall be required while applying:

  • CV or resume.
  • Educational certificates.
  • Statement of purpose.
  • Letter of recommendation.
  • Letter of motivation.

Candidates must have a myUC account for applying to the scholarship. It is necessary to register on myUC before applying. The candidates must have a minimum required score in English language proficiency tests as well. If the candidate is shortlisted, an offer letter will be sent by the university which must be accepted within one month of the date of the offer. If the offer letter is not accepted within the specified time, the scholarship may lapse.


Selection Process

The Ngau Boon Keat Postgraduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering is awarded by the council of the university on the recommendation of the selection committee comprising of the following members:

  • Tan Sri Dr. Ngau Boon Keat (or nominee);
  • The Dean of Engineering and Forestry (or nominee);
  • The Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (or nominee); and
  • A representative of the University of Canterbury Foundation.

To select the deserving candidate for the award, the committee considers the-

  • academic qualifications
  • quality of institute or program pertaining to the candidate’s qualifying degree
  • previous work experience, research work, research publications, etc.

Recipients are required to accept the scholarship offer within a month of the date of offer or the offer will lapse if not formally accepted.


Grant Details

The Ngau Boon Keat Postgraduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering awards an amount of NZD 25,000 per annum to selected candidates who want to study in New Zealand at the University of Canterbury. The scholarship is available for candidates enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in mechanical engineering.

The scholarship value for candidates enrolled in the part-time course will be evaluated as two-third of the value given to a candidate enrolled in a full-time course. Furthermore, the duration of the scholarship also varies. The duration of the scholarship for a part-time student will be calculated as 1.5 times the number of months that a full-time student would receive.

For candidates enrolled in a master’s degree, the scholarship is tenable up to 120 points and for those studying doctoral programs, the award is tenable up to 360 points. The scholarship will be paid pro-rata if the candidate is enrolled in a course of fewer than 120 points in one academic year.

The scholarship amount will be paid on a monthly basis and will be credited to the candidate’s nominated New Zealand bank account. Nonetheless, the amount will be received only after acceptance of the offer letter and confirmation of enrolment in a relevant course at the University of Canterbury.

Terms and Conditions

  • The continuation of the scholarship is subjected to the candidate’s growth in the program and academic performance.
  • It must be ensured that one follows the rules and regulations of the university.
  • It is important to inform the scholarship office if a candidate receiving the award decides to suspend, complete or cease their enrolment in the program for which the scholarship was awarded. In such cases, the scholarship will be withdrawn and the university holds the right to recover the funds.

The scholarship scheme was established in 2016 by the Malaysian alumnus Tan Sri Dr. Ngau Boon Keat. Only one scholarship may be awarded at a time to the meritorious student enrolling in the relevant field of study. Applicants who want to apply for the scholarship must make sure to complete their scholarship application on time.
