UBC Vantage One Excellence Award

The UBC Vantage One Excellence (VOE) Award is a scholarship for international students who want to study at University of British Columbia (UBC). Every year, the Vantage One program provides a large number of scholarships based on academic merit and financial need. Students must have recognized achievements in performing arts, sports, debating creative writing or external academic competitions and exams. 

The Excellence Award, offered exclusively to undergraduate students enrolled in the Vantage One program, includes the following features:

  • The award covers the entire cost of the recipient's degree at UBC, including their living expenses.
  • The award can be renewed for up to three years after the completion of the Vantage One program.
  • The selection process for this highly esteemed award is carried out by UBC Vantage College in collaboration with the UBC International Student Program.

The programs combine first-year coursework with additional academic mentorship and English language resources, so each student is prepared to successfully progress into the second year of their chosen UBC degree.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be an international student holding Canadian Student Visa are eligible to apply. Along with that, applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria listed below :

  • Applicants must be entering UBC Vantage one degree program and completed secondary school.
  • Must be applying for the first UG degree program at UBC.
  • Must meet admission requirements at UBC and UBC Vantage English Language Admission requirements.
  • Have academic excellence records.
  • Must be nominated by the institution that they are currently attending.
  • Demonstrate a significant level of financial need.

Application Process

Students must be nominated by their respective institutions where they have completed their last education. The application process for the Excellence Award in the Vantage One program includes the following steps:

  • Eligible students must apply to the Vantage One program.
  • Applicants must complete and submit an online application for the award through the UBC Student Service Centre.
  • The application should include all relevant documents, including transcripts, personal statements, and reference letters.
  • Applications are reviewed and evaluated by a selection committee, and finalists may be invited for an interview.
  • Recipients of the Excellence Award are notified by email.

Student Supporting Documents

  • Academic transcripts with certified translations
  • Academic References
  • Extracurricular and volunteer activities awards and achievements.
  • Two essays on the topic:
    • How do you envision your chosen program of study at UBC helping you reach your long-term career and personal goals? What drives you to achieve your goals? (Maximum 250 words)
    • Describe a leader deceased or alive whose values and beliefs you identify with. How do you envision yourself embodying these qualities during your time at UBC and beyond? (Maximum 250 words)
  • One essay about: 
    • Describe a meaningful success that you have experienced. What role did you play and how did this experience affect you? Describe a failure that you have experienced. What role did you play; how did this experience affect you and what was the resolution? (Maximum 300 words)
  • Information regarding family wealth and assets of the nominee.
  • Information regarding sources of financial support.

Vantage College also accepts online submissions. They must be completed and sent to international.award@ubc.ca with the subject line “ Vantage One Excellence Award.

Applications for the 2023 school year are now closed.  Applications for the 2024 academic year will open in October 2023.

Selection Process

The selection process for the Excellence Award, which is reserved for undergraduate students attending the Vantage One program and covers the entire cost of their degree at UBC, including living expenses, includes the following steps:

  • Academic Merit
  • Financial Need
  • Personal statement
  • Extracurricular activities and Achievement

  • Eligibility review: UBC Vantage College assesses each student's academic and financial credentials to determine their eligibility for the award.
  • Nomination: After the eligibility review, UBC Vantage College nominates candidates who meet the award's criteria.
  • Selection committee review: A selection committee reviews the nominated candidates and selects recipients based on their academic achievements, leadership skills, community service, and financial need.
  • Notification: UBC Vantage College notifies the selected recipients of the award via email or letter, including information on the prize's value and conditions of renewal.

The selected students will receive the full cost of the student’s academic program and living costs at the University of British Columbia.


Grant Details

UBC Vantage One Excellence Award is offered to international students who wish to commence their UG studies at UBC. The award covers the entire cost of the recipient's undergraduate degree program at UBC, including tuition fees, books, and living expenses. Separate applications must be submitted by the students to be considered for the same.

The award will cover the full cost of the program including the cost of living in Canada at UBC. The One Excellence award is renewable for up to three years beyond the Vantage One program, provided the student maintains the three requirements:

  1. The recipient maintains its status as an international student in Canada.
  2. Show academic Progress.
  3. Update financial needs.
