UBC Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship

UBC Graduate Dean's Entrance Scholarship is a highly coveted award that recognizes academic excellence and supports exceptional students in their pursuit of advanced studies. Eligibility Criteria

The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarships to students who are entering a research-based graduate program at UBC. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship include the following:

  • Applicants must be entering a research-based master’s or doctoral program at UBC in the upcoming academic year.
  • Applicants must not have completed a graduate degree at any other institution.
  • Applicants must not be currently enrolled in a graduate program at UBC.
  • Applicants must have an excellent academic record, with a minimum overall average of A- (equivalent to a 3.67 GPA at UBC) in their most recent two years of full-time study.

Application Process

No external application is required, applicants will be automatically considered for UBC Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship. Once you have applied to UBC, you will receive instructions on how to apply for the scholarship. To apply for this scholarship, please follow the steps below:

  1. Submit your application for admission to UBC Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the program’s deadline. The scholarship application will be considered only if the applicant has applied to a graduate program and meets the minimum academic requirements.
  2. Log in to the Student Service Centre (SSC) using your CWL account.
  3. Click on the “Award Search” tab, then select “Graduate Awards” and search for “Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship”.
  4. Complete the “Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship” application form by the deadline indicated on the award posting. The application requires you to provide your personal information, academic achievements, research experience, and a personal statement.
  5. Submit the completed application form along with any required documents (e.g., transcripts, letters of recommendation) by the deadline.

Document Checklist: 

  • A personal statement (maximum 500 words) outlining your academic achievements, research experience, and career goals.
  • Three letters of reference from academic referees who can speak to your academic potential and research ability.
  • A copy of your undergraduate transcripts.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.


Selection Process

Graduate programs review and evaluate each admission application that has been submitted by the application deadline date. They are evaluated based on the academic scores submitted with the admission applications. 

Graduate programs may allocate the awards over the course of three rounds:

Round I:  Offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the May admission period

Round II: Offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the September admission period

Round III: Offers are made to the top-ranked student(s) for the January admission period.

Only successful candidates will be notified of UBC Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship.


Grant Details

Students who wish to pursue higher education in Canada at UBC with some financial aid are eligible for the UBC Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship. 

Students must be commencing doctoral or master’s programs at UBC to be eligible for the scholarship. Admission applications will be evaluated for the selection of the recipients.

Terms and Conditions regarding UBC Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship:

  • Recipients must maintain satisfactory progress in their program of study.
  • Must remain registered as a full-time student for each term of the scholarship payment
  • College of Graduate Studies reserves the right to cancel a scholarship of recipient’s unsatisfactory progress. 
  • An award will be suspended at the onset of the leave, and reinstated at the termination of the leave period, provided the student returns to full-time study within the same year.
  • If the recipient transfers out of the program for which the scholarship is awarded, he/she may retain the full scholarship payment only if both programs are in agreement 
  • If the recipient withdraws from their program of study, the funding received during the term for which the withdrawal is processed will be recovered by the College of Graduate Studies. 
  • It will be returned to the nominating program for further allocation.
