Macquarie Research Scholarship

Macquarie Research Scholarship is offered students who wish to pursue research work at Macquarie University. International Research Training Programs Scholarship (iRTP)and International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship (iMQRES) are covered under this scholarship

  • Students pursuing high-degree research programs at Macquarie University are eligible.
    • It includes postgraduate and research study levels.
  • Students must have completed or expected to complete their research master’s degree.
  • Recipients will receive a tuition fee waiver for three years and an annual stipend while pursuing research.

Candidates applying for International Research Training Programs Scholarship will be automatically considered for International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship.

Applications for iRTP must be sent before April 30, 2023, to be considered for Macquarie Research Scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

To secure the Macquarie Research Scholarship, applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Applicants must be eligible to participate in an HDR grade Program. It includes:
    • MRES2: The Research Training Pathway MRes (Year 2) program followed by a possible Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship for Ph.D.
    • Ph.D.: Direct entry to a 3 year Doctor of Philosophy program
    • MPHIL: Direct entry to a 2 year Master of Philosophy program
  • Applicants must be international students.
  • Potential applicants are expected to manage external research funding.
  • Applicants are expected to reside in Australia for the entire period of research.
  • Must enroll in a higher degree research program in Australia for the first time.
  • Must have an undergraduate degree from a recognized university or institute.

Must demonstrate high English proficiency with an overall 6.5 IELTS score.


Application Process

Candidates applying for International Research Training Programs Scholarship are automatically considered for International Macquarie Research Scholarship.

A combined admission application for the Higher Degree Research program and the scholarship must work in all.


Selection Process

Before applications are submitted to a faculty for consideration, applications will be originally evaluated for completeness and eligibility.

The faculty’s request and recommendation are then reviewed by the Delegate of the Higher Degree Research Committee.

Relevant research qualifications which may be taken into consideration are:

  • Completion of a research Masters’s degree or equivalent e.g. a coursework Masters with a relevant research component providing information on thesis abstract, grade, examination process, length, and the percentage of research component in the course.
  • Published research in journals, books, book chapters, etc
  • Conference presentation
  • Highly relevant and substantial work-related research experience.

A selection committee rate applications based on the above documents. After the final decision is taken, applicants are notified about the same.


Grant Details

Students who wish to study in Australia at Macquarie University and pursue a research degree are eligible for Macquarie Research Scholarship.

Successful iRTP candidates will receive:

  • Tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Stipend (tax-exempt, indexed annually, 2020 rate $28,092pa)
  • Travel Concession (applied to local transport OPAL Card)

Successful iMQRES candidates will receive :

  • Tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Stipend (tax-exempt, indexed annually, 2020 rate $28,092pa)
