Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship

Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship aims to support academically outstanding graduate students undertaking full-time research education at the University of Alberta (UAlberta).

  • It applies to research-based masters and doctorate programs offered by UAlberta. 
  • Students must submit an application form along with the required documents to their department.
    • The respective department will then nominate eligible students for the scholarship.
  • The scholarship amount varies with the program of study.
    • For masters program: 26,000 CAD
    • For doctorate program: 31, 000 CAD

Recipients of Tri-Council Scholarships (NSERC/CIHR and Vanier), China Scholarship Council and other external peer-reviewed award holders who also received Alberta Innovates GSS will get additional funding of 12, 000 CAD.

The scholarship is renewable upto 4 years depending on fulfilling ongoing eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria listed below :

Ongoing Eligibility

  • Must be full-time registered in the renewal year
  • Must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the past year
  • Also, send a renewal form to FGSR 6 weeks in advance of the date of renewable.

Application Process

To apply for Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship, applicants must contact their respective departments at the University of Alberta. Application form along with required documents must be sent directly to the department.

  • Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship Application form must be completed.
  • It must include UAlberta ID#’s, and student and/or supervisor signatures.
  • Two LOR(s) must be signed by each applicant’s referee.
    • It may submit letters of reference in sealed envelopes to their Department.
    • Alternatively, referees may send the forms directly to the department.
  • Academic Transcripts with certified translations.

Selection Process

FGSR will review all submitted applications case-by-case for eligibility and completeness. It will then forward to the Graduate Scholarship Committee (GSC) for further process.

The GSC will evaluate the applicants based on their excellence and strategic alignment in Platform Areas of scientific research important to Alberta.

These Areas are Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Nanotechnology and Omics; (Omics consists of Metabolomics, Transcriptomics, Genomics, Proteomics, and Regulomics) in and of themselves or which additionally support the innovation priority areas of Environment & Climate, Energy, Food & Agriculture, Fibre/Bioindustrial and Health.

Students who wish to pursue higher education in Canada at the University of Alberta may apply for Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship.

  • Recipients of Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship will get a tuition fee waiver :
    • For masters program: 26,000 CAD
    • For doctorate program: 31, 000 CAD
  • The scholarship is renewable for upto  4 years.

 Recipients must meet ongoing eligibility requirements to continue to receive the scholarship grants.
