University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship

University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship is offered to students who wish to study at the University of Alberta(UAlberta). It aims to recruit students at the doctoral level who have the potential to contribute to the University of Alberta's community and research.

  • Under, University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship, recipients will receive 5,000 CAD.
  • Students must enroll in doctoral programs at UAlberta.
  • The respective department will nominate students to the Faculty of Graduate Study and Research (FSGR)
    • The deadline for the same is March 31, 2023.

The selection of the recipients will be done by FSGR based on the nominations sent by the department and the academic background of the nominated students.

Eligibility Criteria

To secure the University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship, students must meet the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Must be either domestic or international students with a visa to study in Canada.
  • Must enroll in full-time doctoral programs at UAlberta.
  • Must have an admission GPA of 3.5 or more
  • Students transferred from a master’s program to doctoral programs are also eligible.
    • provided both their APGA and current program GPA are 3.5 or over.

Note 1: Transfer students please ensure the Recommendation for Change of Category form is sent to FGSR Program Services before the nominations.

Note 2: In exceptional cases, If a candidate does not score a GPA of 3.5 or more, a justification letter must be included with the nomination letter.


Application Process

No separate application is required, candidates will be nominated by the respective departments at the University of Alberta. Departments may choose to nominate students based on a variety of criteria such as:

  • Academic record
  • Letters of appraisal
  • Statement of program
  • Applicant's research
  • Potential contributions to research and technical experience.

Submit Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship Nominations Forms (FGSR’s website) via email to grad.awards@ualberta.ca in PDF format.

For newly enrolled students: Flag all applications for admission for applicants that will be nominated for an award as "Scholarship".

This will alert FGSR Admission Services to process them as a priority.

Departments are to notify FGSR Award Services when a student declines admission.

For master’s students transferring to the doctoral program: First ensure the Recommendation for Change of Category form is sent to FGSR Program Services at the same time of nomination, or before. Then identify the student as a scholarship nominee so Program Services can process them as a priority.

Note: Change of Category and recruitment nomination form will not be processed until final grades are posted for the term preceding the nomination deadline (ex. master’s transfer to Ph.D. effective Spring term will not be processed if there are winter term grades outstanding.


Selection Process

After the nominations are received by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR), next comes the selection process.

FGSR will verify the eligibility of the candidate. Selection is based on academic background, research proposal and test scores of the students.

FGSR will then approves the award and notifies winners directly.

Note: In the case of multi-year offers, renewal after the first year depends on the student maintaining first-class standing (minimum GPA of at least 3.5).


Grant Details

University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship is offered to students who wish to study in Canada at UAlberta. Students must enroll in a doctoral program at the UAlberta.

  • Current doctoral students are ineligible for the nomination.
  • No nomination will be considered unless the department has officially made the decision to enroll or transfer the student into the doctoral program.
  • Recipients will receive an amount of 5000 CAD under this scholarship.
    • It may vary, the award amount will be indicated in the offer letter.
  • Students must be active on campus in person in order to receive payment.
