King Carl Gustaf Scholarship at Uppsala University is designed to support meritorious students who cannot fund their own education in Sweden. The scholarship covers the full tuition fees of the recipients who will be commencing their master’s degree at Uppsala University

  • King Carl Gustaf Scholarship is only applicable for international students belonging to an eligible country.
  • The applications will open on January 17, 2023 and close on 1 February 2023 23:59 CET .
  • Only those applicants who choose Uppsala University as their first choice will be considered for the scholarship program.
  • Recipients are shortlisted on the basis of academic merit and not financial requirements.
  • The masters's program must be on campus and English-taught, based in Uppsala or on Gotland.

Eligibility Criteria

As of 2023, you must not only be from outside the EU/EEA, but you must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria or Yemen.

In addition to that, students cannot be awarded a scholarship for:

  • Masters in Religion in Peace and Conflict
  • Masters in Biology - NABiS Nordic Master in Biodiversity and Systematics
  • Joint Nordic Master's Programme in Environmental Law
  • Master's programme in Turkic Studies
  • Master's programme in Implementation
  • Transformative Learning and Sustainability or Master's programme in Biology

Other than that, there are no restrictions on what stream of study you can choose, and Uppsala offers a wide range of options.

  • You must show why you are particularly vulnerable and therefore in need of the educational environment at Uppsala University, as well as that you have the academic talent required.
  • You can only be awarded a King Carl Gustaf scholarship for a Master’s programme at Uppsala University chosen as first priority (the programme which you have ranked the highest of the four programmes you can choose at University Admissions).
  • You must have applied for the Master's programme before the University Admissions deadline.
  • You must meet the entry requirements for the programme you applied to. The application fee and your complete supporting documents must be received by University Admissions before the deadline.

Application Process

The window for application to King Carl Gustaf Scholarship at Uppsala University will open on January 17, 2023. Students can complete their scholarship application process by February 1, 2023, 23:59 CET.

  • Before this, you must submit an application for an Uppsala master’s program via universityadmissions.se before January 16, 2023.
    • You must rank Uppsala as your number one choice out of the four options in the common application.
  • During the scholarship application period, you must submit an online application form.

You do not have to submit any extra documents in the scholarship application form as those will be verified from your programme application. The following things, however, must be given:

  • Personal details
  • Your first priority Masters programme
  • Motivation letter/ SOP of no more than 350 words explaining
    • why you are vulnerable and in need of education at Uppsala University?
    • what academic talent you have?

You are allowed to apply for more than one scholarship for which you meet the specific eligibility criteria, but you will receive only one of them at most.


Selection Process

Candidates are selected based on how deserving they are in terms of the situation in their home country. However, the selection is not need-based but is merit-based.

  • You must show why it would be safer and more viable for you to do your degree in Sweden.
  • You must show that your academic record meets the eligibility criteria and is exceptional.
