AAUW International Fellowships

AAUW International Fellowship program is designed for international female students pursuing full-time research studies at U.S. universities. The fellowship applies to graduate, doctoral or postdoctoral programs at US universities.

  • AAUW International Fellowship award value differs according to the level of study.
  • Separate applications must be completed by candidates along with all the required documents.
  • Only five International Fellowships for master’s/ first professional degrees will be renewable for a second year.
    • For this, fellows will receive application information for these programs during their fellowship year.
  • Women who demonstrate a prior commitment to the advancement of women and girls through the civic, community, or professional work are given preference.
  • Applications for AAUW International Fellowships 2023 opened on August 1, 2022. Eligible students can submit their application till November 15, 2022.

Students must ensure that their completed application form along with recommendations and other documents are submitted before the deadlines. Fellowship decisions will be announced on April 15, 2023. However, the fellowship period will begin from July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024

Eligibility Criteria

To secure the AAUW International Fellowships, applicants have to fulfill the criteria established by the foundation. The applicant must :

  • Be an international student with a U.S student visa.
  • Hold an academic bachelor’s degree from the U.S. or any globally recognized university.
  • Commence a full-time program graduate or doctoral program at any chosen US institution.
  • Hold an academic degree (earned in the U.S. or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by November 15, 2022.
  • Return to their home country to pursue a professional career.
  • TOEFL or IELTS exam score to be submitted:
    • TOEFL-PBT: 550
    • TOEFL-iBT: 79
    • IELTS: 6.5

Note: Foreign branches of U.S. institutions are considered outside of the U.S.


Application Process

Applicants must complete the AAUW International Fellowships application and access the same from the foundation’s official website.

The AAUW International Fellowships application form will comprise of the following components:

  • Fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
  • Applicant’s name as mentioned in the passport
  • Recommendations: Three LORS from professors or professional colleagues

Along with the form, applicants have to submit documents listed below:

  • Academic Transcripts with certified English translation
  • Proof of bachelor’s degree (postdoctoral applicants only)
  • An official report of TOEFL Test Score or the waiver request,
  • Letter of Admission: The applicant will upload a letter of admission* from the proposed institution of study or research
  • Resume

Note: AAUW does not accept references from dossier services. Recommendations must be uploaded along with the application form.


Selection Process

The selection panel will review each application comprehensively. While selecting the recipients of AAUW International Fellowships, the selection committee evaluates the following details

  • Applicants who are residing in their home country will receive special consideration.
  • Intent to return to their home country after the degree awarded.
  • Academic and/or professional qualifications.
  • Commitment to the advancement of women and girls in her home country is taken into evaluation.
  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed plan of study or research
  • Provide proof of prior community and/or civic service in the home country.
  • Financial need is considered.
  • Demonstration of motivation for graduate study or research.
  • Applicants should be from an underrepresented area of the country and/or type of university other than a top-level research institution.

Note: Applications, supporting documents, recommendations, etc. become the sole property of AAUW and will neither be returned nor held for another year.


Grant Details

AAUW International Fellowship program encourages female students to pursue master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees at universities in the USA.

  • Limited no. of awards are offered to the recipients of AAUW International Fellowships.
  • Upto 5 masters’s/first professional degrees will be renewable for a second year.

The award value for various degrees are mentioned in the following table:

AAUW International Fellowships award can be used for educational expenses, living expenses, dependent child care, etc, Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars as long as it does not exceed 10% of the fellowship.

There are some exceptions to the stipend- some exceptions based on relevant tax treaties and statuses, the fellowship stipend is subject to a 14 or 30 percent tax. AAUW International Fellowships does not cover :

  • Purchase of equipment
  • Indirect costs
  • Research assistants
  • Previous expenditures, deficits, or repayment of loans
  • Publication costs
  • Institutional (overhead) costs
  • Tuition for dependent’s education
  • Travel to or from a fellow’s home country
  • Travel to or from the fellow’s research location, if abroad (does not apply to fellows who are GWI members with AAUW approval to study or research in a country other than their own
