President's PhD Scholarships

Imperial College London offers 50 fully-funded awards in the form of President's PhD Scholarships to the students who want to pursue research at the college. Students must enroll in Imperial College London’s doctoral programs to be eligible.

  • Students must be high performing UG and master’s pass students.
  • No separate application forms are required to gain the scholarship.
  • The respective research department will put forward the admission application if the candidate is eligible.
  • Selected students will be offered with an annual stipend of 21,400 GBP.

Selection is based on academic merit, potential, and personal statement including student’s research goals and interests.

It is reported by Imperial College London that financial aid for research programs is competitive. Students must concentrate on highlighting their academic performances and achievements to be selected.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship invites applications from all students irrespective of their nationalities who wish to study abroad at Imperial College London. In addition to that, they must meet other requirements specified for the scholarship.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in one of the doctoral programs at Imperial College London
  • Must have a first-class UK degree or its equivalent international degree.
  • Must have a high rank in their UG and PG studies.
  • The student with multiple master’s degrees, the degree relevant to their research studies must have a distinction.
  • Current registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible

Before applying to the scholarship, candidates must be in touch with a supervisor at the academic department at Imperial College who has agreed to supervise or mentor their research.

Note: Supervisors are only allowed to take on one candidate at a time and students must be aware of the available supervisors.


Application Process

To be considered for the President's PhD Scholarships the correct option must be selected during admission. The scheme must be selected from the funding option which can be found under the additional questions tab.

Applicants must have secured admission at Imperial College of London to be eligible for the scholarship.

The candidate’s department then forwards the student’s profile if the academic track-record and potential meets the scholarship’s eligibility criteria.

  • Candidates will be asked to write a personal statement in about 1000 words and should 2 pages long.
  • The statement outlines the candidate’s academic and research achievements to date, explaining, in brief, their planned research project
  • Corrections and updates to the personal statement can be done.

.Once the students meet all the requirements, they move onto the selection process.


Selection Process

The shortlisted candidates will go through the two-step selection process to gain benefits from the President’s Ph.D. Scholarships.

  • All students must meet the admission requirements of the department they have applied to.
  • The department will shortlist the best candidate based on their profile to the scholarship panel for the next step in the process.

President's PhD Scholarships Selection Step II

  • The Imperial College’s Selection Panel will take the final decision regarding winners of the scholarship.
  • The panel consists of the Vice-Provost of Research and the Faculty Vice-Deans for Research.
  • All students who have been shortlisted will be judged on their potential and past performance.

All candidates who have been shortlisted by their respective department will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Academic performance High achievers in the UG and master’s education level. Documents submitted during the admission process will also be considered. Students who have 85% or higher grades will be considered.
Research potential Candidates must have demonstrated the potential for research previously. They must provide proof of interest in the research plan, the discovery of research. Their personal statement must also reflect such a statement.
Suitability The candidate must have appropriate references to back up their applications. Their chosen supervisor must show support. The candidate’s interview performance will be considered.

Recipients of the scholarship will be informed by the Imperial College London through a written confirmation.

Until the final interview is held and the qualifications yet to be received are submitted, the offer letter extended will be conditional.


Grant Details

Imperial College London provides financial support for international students in the UK in the form of President's PhD Scholarships. Students must enroll in any one of the doctoral programs offered by Imperial College London.

A total of 50 scholarships are offered under this.

Successful candidates will receive the following benefits for up to 3.5 years :

  • Full funding for tuition fees
  • A stipend 21,400 GBP annually to assist with living costs
  • A consumables fund of 2000 GBP annually for the first 3 years of study
  • A program of bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Graduate School
