The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organization for cultural inclusiveness and educational opportunities. The main objective of this program of the British Council is to enhance opportunities for female students in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This initiative has a wide ranging goal of encouraging young girls to continue in STEM and supporting the women who have careers in related industries to take up responsibilities of leadership and build strong networks with their colleagues.

The gender divide in STEM fields is well-known. In this discipline, women publish fewer research papers and are paid less in comparison to the men. Despite being on an average 8% more productive than their male colleagues, they are less likely to acquire positions of leadership.

“We are delighted to have been granted British Council scholarships for the second successive year at Strathclyde. The British Council scholarship programme aligns with our ethos at Strathclyde to encourage more females to pursue STEM related careers, and to help address the gender gap. This is a life -changing opportunity for five candidates from the eligible countries to join us at the University of Strathclyde to complete their fully funded MSc studies.", said Professor Scott MacGregor, vice principal of the University of Strathclyde.
