This course aims to equip students to develop understanding of the current issues in the psychology of education and provide them with an opportunity to engage in research. On successful completion of the programme students should be able to produce and communicate reasoned and informed argument, both in writing and orally. Students will also be able to critically evaluate theory and evidence in psychology.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (60 credits), two optional modules (60 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

Core Topics in the Psychology of Education

By introducing participants to theory and research in important areas in the psychology of education, this module aims to broaden students' knowledge and understanding of key issues. In doing so it aims to develop skills of critical analysis, and also to enable participants to identify implications of relevant research for their practice. This will be achieved by a range of teaching methods. Key topics include thinking and reasoning; motivation; metacognition; teacher expectations; teacher-pupil and pupil-pupil interactions in learning and development, emotional intelligence in education and aspects of language development.

Methodology and Statistics

This module considers methods of psychological research and the analysis of data. It aims to enhance the ability to understand and use various research methods and develop expertise in running statistical analyses using SPSS.
