  • M.Phil in Finance and Economics at the University of Cambridge is offered on a full-time basis for a duration of 11-months.
  • This is an on-campus and thesis-based program.
  • This is an intensive course combining advanced study and research with one year or less of work experience who intend to go on to work for the industry.
  • The MPhil in Finance and Economics is a one-year master's degree that runs from mid-September to late July.
  • Students have to attend the preparatory course in Mathematics and Statistics and take 6 compulsory modules.
  • Students also have to take 2 optional modules and write a dissertation of up to 10,000 words.
  • Students have to attend 5 or 7 classes per year for each compulsory module.
  • A total number of lecture hours for the course is 153 hours per year.
  • Each student takes 8 coursework modules. Each module has 18 hours of lecture time, except for Econometric Methods, which has 27 hours of lectures.
  • The preparatory course consists of 48 hours of lecture time.
  • Students have to give a written examinations that are held in January, May/June.
  • The department is consists of 39 academic staff, 10 postdoctoral researchers, 225 graduate students and 500 undergraduates.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

Students from UK universities:

  • An undergraduate degree in economics, with at least a good 2.1 (average grade over 68%).
  • The degree should include standard courses in intermediate level microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics (a business studies, accountancy or management degree or qualification does not provide an adequate background).

Students from North American institutions:

  • An undergraduate degree in economics from a recognized institution.
  • A GPA of at least 3.6 out of 4.0 or the equivalent is required.

Students from other countries:

  • Students are strongly encouraged to include supporting information on their ranking within each academic year.
  • Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL and PTE to get admission in this program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they complete one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • The Board of Graduate Studies requires students from some countries to have completed a Master's degree before they can be considered for the MPhil at Cambridge. 
  • Students whose Bachelor's degree does not meet the entry requirements for the MPhil may be considered for the Advanced Diploma in Economics. The Diploma in Economics can be taken as the first year of a 2-year Master's Programme, then they would be allowed to continue to the MPhil in their second year.
  • Students with a Bachelor's degree in Economics (3-year degree) from an Indian University are required to apply for the Diploma in Economics before continuing onto the MPhil in their second year.
  • Completed a B.Sc/B.Com/B.A (3-4 year) degree from well-ranked institutions with an overall grade of 70% or CGPA 7.3+.
