The construction industry requires highly trained quantity surveyors to work in the industry in a role that is continually developing.
The aim of this programme is to provide students with the comprehensive knowledge of the quantity surveyors key role with the construction industry, providing students with the necessary skills to be able to enter a quantity surveying career and further their career through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
For this reason, all aspects of the programme have been mapped against the RICS core competencies of the assessment of professional competency (APC). You will develop practical skills relating to:
- Construction technology and sustainability;
- Health and safety;
- Quantity surveying;
- Measurement;
- Project and risk management;
- Contract administration and construction legislation;
- Construction economics.
A placement of 36 weeks is required for a university sandwich award, but 48 weeks is the norm for accredited training by a professional body.
Department staff will endeavour to assist you in securing a placement, and the training programme will be agreed with the employer to ensure that academic knowledge is integrated with practice and that an appreciation of the professional role is developed. Students' progress during placement is supervised by the employer and by a university tutor.
The aims of this programme are:
- To provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the quantity surveyors key role within the construction industry. This programme is vocational and aims to produce students equipped with the necessary skills to be able to enter a quantity surveying career and further their career through the RICS. For this reason all aspects of the programme have been mapped against the RICS core competencies.
- To develop knowledge of management, technology, law and economics in the context of the construction and property industries together with the practical and theoretical aspects of the modern quantity surveyor.
- To provide the opportunity for students to develop problem solving and critical analysis techniques. Furthermore, the research development and data collection methods learned when undertaking the Project Module may act as a catalyst for students to progress to Masters or Doctorate Level, should they wish to do so.
