About this course
- The MSc in Public Health & Health Services Research is for those who are seeking to gain or enhance a high level of health research skills.
- This MSc combines a range and high standard of health services research methods with the principles of public health science and practice.
- After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills to be able to proceed with a PhD or start or develop your career in public health and health services or related areas.
- MSc in Public Health & Health Services Research grows out of the Institute’s determination to undertake research and teaching to:
- understand, promote and maintain health and wellbeing for all
- identify, tackle and prevent the causes of ill-health and reduce inequalities
- design novel interventions to optimise health and care
- You'll usually study an MSc full-time over 12 months.
- A Master of Science is awarded for the successful completion of 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation or research project.
- You'll receive a mix of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. They encourage active learning through discussion, problem-solving and group work.
- Some of the topics covered include:
- How do the “intersecting oppressions” of gender, race and class contribute to health inequalities?
- How can we collect quantifiable data on health behaviours, experiences and attitudes from representative samples of populations of interest?
- How do global challenges affect health policies and health systems at an international level?
- Graduates can go on to work in:
- government
- the voluntary sector
- healthcare and service delivery
- consultancies
- the private sector where there is involvement with providing healthcare and public services
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students should have a high school degreAAB including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology, and excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking.
- For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A Levels, we require a pass in the practical element.
- GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B or 6) required if Physics not offered at a higher level.
- International Baccalaureate 34 points with Mathematics at Higher Level grade 6. Physics required at Standard Level grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level.
Indian Eligibility:
- Typically Newcastle recognizes an 80% average in Standard XII as comparable to AAB at A-Level.
- This can be awarded by:
- Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
- Council for the Indian School Certificate (CISCE)
- National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
- Various state boards
- Autonomous schools
- The actual grades required will vary depending on the exam board.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, tests required to study in the UK, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
