As the course covers both human and physical geography, you can tailor the course to your interests by choosing appropriate units from year two.
In addition to gaining a sophisticated education, youÕll also graduate with the practical skills needed to work in a range of industries, through multiple field trips including opportunities along the nearby Jurassic Coast, the Isle of Wight and the New Forest. WhatÕs more, in year two thereÕs an opportunity to complete field experience abroad. In the past themes have included conservation practice in China, and preparation for climate change in farming communities in Nepal, but youÕll receive more information on this at the end of year one.
Taught by an expert-led team of lecturers, academics and guest speakers, highlights of this diverse course include core and optional units such as Marine Geography, Earth & Society, Biological Oceanography, Cultural Ecology, Globalisation & Marginalisation, and Environmental Law & Management.
The course also develops transferable skills such as team working, research and analysis. All students complete work placements to gain valuable employment skills, contacts and real world experience with a wide range of local and international opportunities, making contacts for the future. You may choose to do two five-week placements or one of these short placements and an optional long placement of at least 30 weeks. We have dedicated Placement Coordinators to help you make the most of these opportunities and support you while on placement.
Our students in the Life and Environmental Sciences Department work in partnership with our staff to co-create featured projects, collaborating with professional practioners and also assisting with individual placement opportunities. Take a look at our Co-creating Science web page to find out about the exciting projects and placements our students get involved in, including visits to New Zealand, Yellowstone and also Plankton Diversity in Southampton Water to name just a few. You can even have a look at studentsÕ class projects and dissertations.
