The programme details of this course are provided by:School of Geography and Geosciences: The School of Geography & Geosciences is an interdisciplinary community structured into two departments: Earth & Environmental Sciences and Geography & Sustainable Development, both offering several degree options. The School's mission is to promote world-class teaching and research across a broad spectrum of Geography and Geosciences. The Department of Geography & Sustainable Development is a leading centre for geographical scholarship. It integrates the study of the earth system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is part of a rich and ongoing tradition of research aimed at understanding our planet. Our teaching is research-led and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) our research was judged to be 'internationally excellent'.School of Mathematics and Statistics: The School of Mathematics & Statistics is a world class School both in teaching and research. We teach a wide range of basic and specialist courses in all branches of mathematical sciences. We are consistently placed within the top few universities in the UK (and top in Scotland) in the annual league tables and student satisfaction surveys; the Guardian University Guide (2013) ranked us second. Particular strengths that our degree programmes boast include: a broad coverage of the subject area; instruction in medium- to small-sized classes by leading specialists; a friendly but focused academic environment; a large degree of flexibility for students tailoring their own course; higher level specialist courses reflecting research interests of staff; vacation research placements for our best performing students.

You will look at Geography's unique role as a discipline that provides an integrated study of the earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is a discipline which bridges the social sciences (human geography, with its focus on social processes) and the natural sciences (physical geography, with its focus on physical and environmental systems), and which deals with the interactions between society and environment, and physical and human landscapes. You can expect to have the opportunity to engage with a number of specialist topics including, for example, cultural, health, population and urban geographies; environmental management; oceans, weather and climate; and fluvial, glacial and quaternary environments. Within the School of Mathematics you will undertake a final-year dissertation and the have opportunity to study across a broad range of mathematical topics. Students can expect to have the opportunity to engage with a number of specialist topics including for example Abstract Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Group Theory, Solar Theory, Statistics in Practice, Statistical Inference and the History of Mathematics. It may be possible to spend a semester or year studying abroad as part of this degree programme.
