A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts. Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes. So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up. Ultimately, every student has his unique way of studying.

How easy is it to change branch in IIT Kharagpur?

My cousin had got a branch change from Mechanical engineering to Electronics engineering (ECE). He shared his experience with me of how easy it was to get a branch change. The primary and most important thing is to be regular and give equal attention to all subjects. You have to focus on your studies only and not let any distractions take the better of you. Be firm on your goal and give up all time-wasting activities. You need to be rightly motivated and determined to achieve these goals. Not losing hope is the key as one or two exams do not define you. You will get ample opportunities to prove yourself so just keep working hard. My cousin scored below average in the middle of the 2nd semester. However, she got this sudden motivation and studied hard and was able to score an overall CGPA of 9.64. She studied consistently every day and was able to change her branch eventually.

Why is IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering department so deadly? How do they differ from others' IIT Electrical Department?

My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations. It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series. My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab. Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy. Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences. Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty. Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself. I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.

What advice would you give to a fresher at IIT Kharagpur?

Every person will have a different opinion on what advice work best for freshers. Instead of giving you a list of things to follow, I will suggest you just focus on 3 key points Maintain your academics: The primary focus should be your academics and staying at the top of your class. Don’t let your CGP fall below 8 throughout your life at KGP. Learn new things: This does not include just DC++, Counter-Strike, or FIFA. Explore new things such as workshops, society interviews, and sports, or take part in different inter-halls. Make friends: Surviving in an IIT can be much easier with the right set of friends. To interact with your hostel buddies and make new friends that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Overall, you need a highly positive mindset before joining IIT. You need to be passionate about things and be ready to work hard and achieve them.

I am a first year student of IIT Kharagpur. I am not in any society. I have a bad CGPA. Is there anything I can do?

This is a common problem among freshers at IIT Kharagpur. Their CGPA is initially very low and they fail to become a part of any society. While this certainly is a crucial issue, it can be addressed so you don’t have to worry too much and demotivate yourself. Here are 3 simple ways to overcome this problem Academics: Before anything comes academics. So the first thing you should do to come out of such an issue is to improve your CGPA. This isn’t that difficult since one can easily score well by just studying 1-2 weeks prior to exams in IITs. Attend all classes and find the subject that is your strength and work on it. Focus on skills not resume: Shift the focus from building a sound resume to inculcating sound skills. For instance, the dramatics society will add to your speaking skills and confidence. The same can be achieved by just interacting more with people and attending inter-halls. One does not have to build their resume but their skill only. Hosting your department festival will provide you with managerial skills. So work on such activities and don’t run after societies. Take things lightly: Like Steve Jobs once said, “The best resumes never change the world.”, he literally proved it. Neither did he have a good GPA nor was he part of a good society, yet today he is among the richest and most successful people on Earth. Not being a part of society can be taken positively. One has a lot of free time on his hands and can invest the same in interesting things and learn new things. So the key is to work on your academics, develop skills and take it easy.

How good is IIT KGP MBA?

One can judge the worth and credibility of a Brand, Affiliation, Faculty, Return on investment, Infrastructure, Industry Linkage, Location, and Placements. I have done the same through my answer and hope that it clears away all your doubts regarding IIT KGP MBA. Brand: The IIT tag is more than enough to make any course pursued worthy and credible. Faculty: IIT Kharagpur's faculty pool is known to have the best professors, especially in Operations and Finance courses. Pedagogy: The teaching methodology adopted to impart the course content is a case-based approach that ensures a better understanding of real-life business problems. ROI: IIT KGP MBA fees are around 9 Lakhs and are lesser in comparison to top B Schools. Therefore the ROI is also higher. Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur boasts top-notch infrastructure, with excellent amenities like sports facilities, a gymnasium, a big library, and a huge campus. Industry relevance: Most professors conduct research/ consulting work for corporations, so you can get their help during live projects or Internship hunting. Guest visits: IIT KGP witnesses a number of guest lectures and corporate meets and the college has managed to invite guest faculties and industry experts on campus. Location: IIT Kharagpur has a very poor location and thus many top recruiters do not visit the campus despite it being an IIT. Placements: Placements depend upon a lot of factors like work experience, nature of the experience, economic scenario for that year, etc. VGSOM IIT Kharagpur has recorded 100% placements in 2022. All 97 students who opted for placements were placed during VGSOM placements in 2022. How tough is securing above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur?

I wouldn’t say that securing an above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur is very tough. With the right motivation, even an average student can get a 9+ CGPA. When it comes to grading, IIT KGP has two methods Relative Grading: Under this, professors are required to give a 9+ CGPA to 25% of the batch which comprises roughly 100 students. Now it’s up to the professor to decide who is worthy of such high grades. While some professors give a 10 CGPA to only the deserving students, many professors casually grade the students without much thought. Absolute Grading: This is a rather rigid grading system wherein grading is done on the basis of cumulative marks. Students scoring 90–100 get a 10 while those 80–90 get a 9 and so on. The upper and lower limits are not fixed and the cutoff is decided by the professor itself. This grading system is usually followed in the Maths Department. So we can conclude that getting a 9+ CGPA becomes a lot easier if you have no other distractions such as research or social work and you have been attending classes regularly. Lastly, I would like to say that CGPA is not the only deciding factor. There are many students with a decent CGPA of 8+ who have made decent accomplishments and done high-level research or wonders in startups. The main agenda is to gain maximum exposure and then plan your future.

How much is a CGPA of 6.5 (at IIT Kharagpur) in percentage format? Is there any formula?

IIT Kharagpur has adopted a notional factor of 10 for CGPA to Percent conversion. This basically means that Your % = Your C.G.P.A. * 10 Whenever you are required to provide proof of your marks to a company, you can submit your grade sheet. A provisional grade sheet is provided by the institute only on request and after payment of the requisite fee - INR 25 So, your CGPA of 6.5 can be converted into 65 percent.

IIT Kharagpur offers an array of scholarships for its students pursuing UG & PG Programs on a full-time basis. The faculty of the institute also offers research fundings & fellowships to meritorious students. Apart from scholarships, IIT KGP offers financial assistance to meet the expenses of accommodation, research, entrepreneurship, and international travel for various competitions. The scholarships offered by IIT Kharagpur have been broadly divided into many categories and some of them are mentioned below.

Merit Cum Means Scholarship:

The Merit Cum Means Scholarship is awarded from the institute's funds to more than 1000 students on the basis of merits every year. The rules for the Merit Cum Means Scholarship are as follows.

Any student enrolled in any program offered by IIT Kharagpur are eligible for merit cum means scholarships except the students belonging from the SC/ST categories.
However, there's a certain limit for the Merit Cum Means Scholarship as it is not offered to more than 25% of the students enrolled in the UG & dual degree programs at IIT Kharagpur.
Also, a student is required to maintain a minimum GPA of 7.00 for subsequent renewals of the Merit Cum Means Scholarship in the two consecutive semesters.

Private Scholarships:

Apart from the Merit Cum Means Scholarships, the institute also offers various private scholarships to its students

B.P. Poddar Scholarships:

The B.P. Poddar Scholarship is awarded to the best eligible students of the B.Tech/, B.Arch or Dual Degree Program securing the highest CGPA at the end of the semester.
The award of the Scholarship is INR 1000 per month, which is payable for the consecutive 10 months.

Kumud Manorama Scholarship:

The Kumud Manorama Scholarship is awarded to the 3rd year students of the B.Tech program and dual degrees in Mechanical Engineering as per the academic performances of the students.
A sum of INR 1000 is awarded per month in the Scholarship for the 10 months.

K.K. Agarwal Memorial Scholarship:

The K.K. Agarwal Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the best eligible students of the final year of B.Tech/ Dual Degree programs in Agriculture and Food Engineering.
The students receive a sum of INR 400 per month under this scheme of scholarship for consecutive 10 months.

Madan Sundar Sahu Lal Memorial Scholarship:

The Scholarship is granted to the students of the 2nd or final year enrolled in the B.Tech or Dual degree programs on the basis of CGPA scored by the student in the 2nd semester of the program.
Also, the students applying for Madan Sundar Sahu Lal Memorial Scholarship should have an annual family income of less than INR 2.5 lakhs.
An amount of INR 2100 is given per month to the students as an award of the scholarship.

There are also other several options of financial assistance offered at IIT KGP apart from the above-mentioned scholarships that can be availed by the students to meet their tuition fee expenses.
