UC San Diego has introduced new master’s and doctoral degree programs at the Hal?c?o?lu Data Science Institute (HDSI), the university’s hub for all things data science.
The master's and doctoral degree programs unite with UC San Diego’s popular UG data science programs for an integrated slate of courses and degree programs, which will target candidates at all educational levels, including working professionals and industry practitioners.
Speaking about the launch of new programs, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, said that the newly introduced master's and doctoral degree programs are a reflection of the continued investment and academic leadership by UC San Diego in the emerging field of Data Science.
HDSI Launches Two Degree Programs
Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science:
The course aims to create leaders in data science who will challenge and develop the boundaries of knowledge in their field. It will provide a research-oriented education spanning a varied constituents of Data Science including, Algorithms, Machine Learning, Optimization, Statistical Methods, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Ethics.
Candidates pursuing the doctoral degree are also eligible to pursue applications in biology, medical informatics, neuroscience, bioinformatics, oceanography, and other fields of scientific study.
The doctoral program will specifically train the researchers on the topics of generalizability, reproducibility, and responsibility and ethics, in data science.
The researchers of this program will be equipped with these skills to understand the technological limitations and policy requirements in their field.
Professor Yusu Wang, chair of Graduate Programs at HDSI said that the topics are essential characteristics of modern data science practice that are not addressed in the existing programs clearly. Also, there's a core course on ethics in HDSI's graduate program.
In order to familiarise the incoming students with research practises in laboratories and research groups across HDSI, there are fully funded laboratory rotations in the doctoral program.
HDSI’s new graduate degree program offers pathways for developing and training a talent pool drawn from different academic backgrounds.
Further, the incoming students will receive individual counselling sessions and a graduate experience specifically designed to fulfil their requirements when these students opt for HDSI's programs.
The program will place the students into diverse categories based on their academic preparation, including,
- Candidates with a degree or work experience in computer science, electrical engineering, or other engineering areas
- Candidates with a degree or work experience in mathematics or statistics background
- Candidates with a background or work experience in applied data science, such as
- Economics
- Computational Social Sciences
- Natural or Biological Sciences
All the candidates can participate in a course pathway that satisfies their needs, regardless of their background.
Further, the new programs have been designed by the HDSI faculty with a goal of widening student's participation by offering the choice to learn the basics of data science areas at their own pace via online courses.
About HDSI
Hal?c?o?lu Data Science Institute (HDSI), is a university that advances the data science field by discovering principles, methods, and tools that enable students to get an insight about the nature of digital data and its interactions with the existing disciplines of human inquiry.
The Institute seeks to catalyse new research and produce a thriving, self-identifying community of data science researchers, practitioners, and industry partners.
A number of research projects across UC San Diego and the HDSI Industry Partner Alliance member companies and other stakeholders who seek to advance diverse methods and tools on projects where data science has a direct impact are supporting and enabling the new research.
