Montclair State University: It's All Here

SA
8.7 /10

My girlfriend recommended it to me for their psychology program. And since it's a state college, the tuition was not as expensive compared to out of state colleges. The distance also played a role, it is not far from my home. There is even a bus that goes there from port authority in New York. Being a commuter, this played a big role into choosing this college.

Course Curriculum :

The course curriculum seems very fitting. It covers all the basics of psychology and after that it gives the students a choice in which direction they want to go when it gets to the deeper levels of psychology. That's what I like about the curriculum because it doesn't force one set of classes for every student in the program. There is enough liberty in it that students graduating from the psych program can each have knowledge in different areas of psych.

Exams :

I opted for this program because psychology just spoke to me. It is my way of getting my foot in the door to be a potential youth counsellor in the future or to work with at-risk children or to even work with CPS to remove children from abusive families. There were no minimum scores to enter this program, SAT scores were only used to determine what level of math I was to start at. I believe the total credits required for this program is 90.

Placement :

They hold job fairs regularly and many different companies come to these fairs. Some that I remember include Wells Fargo, J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and a lot of other financial institutions. Most of the job fairs though are held by the business school on campus which is why it's mainly financial institutions that come.

Internship :

Yes, the college does offer internship opportunities and on-campus jobs. I have not taken advantage of those offerings as of yet but I do know that they have offices dedicated to that. They offer help in applying to internships and they offer on-campus jobs to help cover tuition

Fees :

They charge a small tuition fee. The exact number I'm not sure about because I have not received my final billing statement for the semester. Since I am a student from the United States, I would not know much about international applicants. I do know that there is an international students program offered by Montclair. One of my classmates is from Jamaica and he told us briefly about the program.

Scholarship :

Yes, I have received financial aid. It's pretty simple all a student would have to do is fill out the FAFSA form and send that to the university.

Examination Structure :

The exam structure is that of other colleges. We have midterms in the middle of the semester and then finals along the end of the semester. Apart from those each class does have their own quiz structure.

Faculty :

The faculty of the college is very good. From my experience, a majority of all psych professors either have their doctorate or their masters. The faculty-student ratio is about 1 to 15. But when it's for the introduction class the ratio balloons up to 1 to about 90. That is only because the intro class to psych is also offered as an elective so many non-psych program students opt to take the class just to see what it's about.

Hostel :

I commute so I do not live on campus. Living on campus would cost too much and since my home is only a 30-minute drive away, it made sense for me to just commute. Also if I were to live on campus I would need to pay for a meal plan which is expensive.
