Civil Engineering involves the design and construction of systems necessary for our modern society to function. It encompasses many technical specialties whose focus is the design of large, normally one-of-a-kind, facilities such as bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, dams, waterways, airports, flood control systems, coastal protection systems, water supply networks, and waste treatment plants.

The educational objectives of the Department of Civil Engineering's undergraduate program are that, within a few years of program completion, graduates should be able to combine skills gained through academic preparation and post-graduation experience so they can:

  • Exhibit technical competence via advancement, professional licensure, and the application of engineering knowledge and problem-solving skills to multiple areas of civil engineering practice.
  • Incorporate economic, environmental, social, and sustainability considerations into the practice of civil engineering.
  • Exhibit effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and professional and ethical behavior as complements to technical competence.
  • Continue their life-long technical and professional development, which may include graduate level education, continuing education, and participation in professional organizations.

Student Outcomes:

  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, science, (including calculus-based physics, general chemistry, and one additional area of science), and engineering.
  • An ability to design and conduct civil engineering experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret the resulting data.
  • An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs with realistic constraints, such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  • An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • An ability to communicate effectively.
  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
  • A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
  • A knowledge of contemporary issues.
  • An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
  • An ability to apply knowledge of four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering.
