BEd in Secondary Education at the University of Alberta is a 4-year teaching program.
It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
The BEd Secondary program is a specialized program in which students will select a teachable major and minor.
The program prepares students to instruct in these two subject areas in Grades 7-12.
It consists of 120 units of course weight overall and a total of 14 weeks of student teaching.
The program can be completed in four years and after completing the program, students will earn a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) and will be recommended for teacher certification in Alberta.
In this program, the education of a teacher is a continuous and life-long process.
All teacher preparation degree programs provide intending teachers with essential practical skills, a knowledge of theory and its relationship to practice, liberal studies, and subject-matter competence.
The Faculty of Education is committed to providing quality teacher preparation programs and recognizes the importance of continuously monitoring, evaluating, and refining its offerings to adequately reflect changes in society and advances in knowledge.
The average class size of Education courses is 27 students. However, as Education students may take courses from a number of different faculties, class size will vary greatly.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

Students from high school will be considered for admission having 70% score based on the average of five subjects given below:
- English Language Arts
- Three subjects from Group A (Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages other than English) and/or C (Maths/Sciences)
- One additional subject from Group A, B (Fine Arts), or C. Or, Physical Education (5 credits) may be used in place of a Group B course.
Students who do not present the high school requirements then students have to successfully complete at an accredited post-secondary institution 24 credits or more (to a maximum of 60) of coursework transferable to the BEd program.
A GPA of 2.0 for postsecondary is required.
Students should hold an English Language Proficiency test score.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Complete International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Secured a minimum of 70% marks in one of these certificates: All India Senior School Certificate, Higher Secondary School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Indian School Certificate.
Completed grade 11 and grade 12 with 70% marks.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
Transcripts: Submit copies of official transcripts from post-secondary institutions attended in PDF format.
Reference Form/Letter: Three reference forms and letters of recommendation completed and uploaded by referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) directly to the online portal.
Three Letters of Reference: The online application system will notify the references and allow the student to upload their letters. Letters can be academic or business references.
