Govt. College Malerkotla is the centre of Higher Education in the territory of Punjabi University Patiala. The college has been awarded 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC Bangalore). The college provides Arts, Commerce, Science streams up to Degree level. The courses of Master of Arts in Political Science, Punjabi, Urdu and Economics are also being run in this college. Advertising, sales Managements courses are being run under U.G.C. scheme. The students of S.C./B.C. classes are given free coaching for various competitive Examinations.

The college has established a placement cell to help students to find jobs for them. The college also has career guidance cell to guide students regarding career perspectives. The college has well equipped library. There are about 59627 books having been divided into “Text”, “General” and “Vocational” titles in the College Library and new books are purchased every year according to the needs of the students. Besides this, more than ten daily vernaculars have been subscribed. There is a reading room where students make good use of their free time.
