M. Tech. in Textile Technology: What is it About?

Textile Technology/ Engineering is a study of textile processing and its production. The engineering course is a combination of advanced principles of engineering and specific knowledge of textile equipment and processes. This field of engineering uses concepts and methods from several other branches of engineering such as chemical, instrumentation, computer, structural, electronic and mechanical engineering.

The course involves the application of scientific and engineering principles to the design and control related to all aspects of fiber, textile and apparel processes, their related products and machinery. These include natural and man-made materials, processing of materials with machines, safety and health, energy conservation, waste management and pollution control. This field provides a wide scope for research as the industry keeps on evolving rapidly and developing new products.

As per the usage of textiles, they are categorized into four main categories:

  • Technical Textiles - protective clothing designed especially for astronauts such as firefighting suits
  • Medical Textiles – medical items like sutures, orthopedic implants, vascular grafts, artificial ligaments, artificial tendons, heart valves and artificial skins.
  • Agro- Textiles – clothing items that protect the farmers and agricultural engineers from the harmful effects of soil and pollution
  • Geo Textiles – protecting workmen during construction work

M. Tech. in Textile Technology: Who Should Opt?

Aspiring eligible candidates with basic knowledge of and interest in textile production such as spinning, weaving, processing, testing, etc., and proficiency in Mathematics, Science and Technology, are ideally suited for the course. Such candidates would also ideally have an aptitude for understanding different textile materials such as dyes and the production of textiles.

Course Duration

The course is spread over 2 years and 4 semesters, with the first year offering theoretical knowledge and practical experience, while the last year mainly focussing on dissertation and project submission.

Eligibility for M. Tech. in Textile Technology

Candidates wishing to apply for the course need to meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • A minimum aggregate score of 55% at the level of graduation (B.E./ B. Tech. or equivalent subject) in a relevant discipline completed from a recognized institute. (For IITs and ICT, the minimum percentage required is 60% at the level of graduation).
  • Besides a GATE qualification, candidates need to have completed graduation in any of:
  • Textile Technology
  • Fiber Science and Technology
  • Textile Chemistry
  • Textile Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Fashion & Apparel Engineering
  • Jute and Fiber Technology
  • Candidates having a Master’s degree in Chemistry or Mathematics are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates awaiting their final year’s exam results can apply too on a provisional basis. Admission shall be confirmed on the basis of performance in graduation.

Many institutes prefer students with professional experience, therefore, it is advised for candidates to have a work experience of a minimum of 24 months. Also, candidates with two years of relevant work experience are exempted from appearing in GATE, provided their candidature is sponsored by the employer.

M. Tech. in Textile Technology: Admission Process

Eligible candidates are required to qualify the relevant entrance examination followed by a round of group discussion. Subsequently, qualifying candidates are needed to go through additional rounds of personal interview as the final stage in the process of selection. The main entrance exam held in India for admission to the course is GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

GATE is an all-India examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The entrance exam is primarily held for admission to post graduate courses in the field of engineering, technology, architecture and science.

To apply for GATE for B.Tech. courses, candidates need to have completed 4 years of graduation. Students in the final year are also eligible to apply. The online test is a multiple- choice and numerical- type exam divided in three sections: General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and respective subject specific knowledge.

However, a few colleges also have their own entrance examinations (written tests and interview) and admission procedures in place for selecting and admitting candidates.
