The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Philosophy

Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units of courses (8 courses) with a maximum of 9 units of courses in each semester. Students are encouraged to structure their own emphasis, they are required to complete at least 9 units (3 courses) from one of the areas listed below:

  • Chinese / Eastern Philosophy
  • Western Philosophy
  • Applied/ Practical Philosophy
Students are required to:
  • take at least 3 units (1 course) from each of the two other areas in order to achieve a reasonable depth and breadth understanding of the discipline.
The M.A. Programme in Philosophy pursues the following objectives:
  • To teach courses on a wide range of topics and subfields in philosophy in both the Eastern and the Western traditions and in applied philosophy, enabling students to obtain a broad knowledge of the discipline and its distinctive method while allowing concentration on certain subfields that suit their own particular interests.
  • To help students develop skills in critical and philosophical enquiry, specifically the ability to think logically and critically, and the ability to read, interpret, analyze, and generate sophisticated arguments.
  • To educate students who can appreciate how philosophy can make a distinctive contribution to their understanding of themselves and of the world, and who can bring philosophical thought to bear on social, cultural, and personal issues.

The Programme is intended for students whose major is not philosophy. With respect to those who may also wish to pursue eventually a research degree in philosophy, the Programme seeks to help them

A less formal but equally important objective is:
  • To create an 'intellectual hub' for those in the community with a serious interest in learning philosophy, a platform where they can discuss important questions in a philosophically informed manner, with openness, rigour, and sympathy, and where they can expose themselves to the latest thinking in the discipline.
