The Graduate Entry Exam in Engineering (GATE) is a pan-India test administered by the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (namely, IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee). The GATE Committee, which is made up of members from the administering institutes, is the only body in charge of controlling the exam and announcing the results.
India's examination cities are divided into eight zones for administrative considerations. GATE operations are overseen by a Zonal GATE Office at the administering institute in each of the eight zones (IIT or IISc). The GATE score/rank is utilized for admissions to Post Graduate Programs (ME, M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) at IITs and IISc, among others, with MHRD financial aid. PSUs, too, use GATE scores to select people for a variety of renowned jobs that pay well.
